Early in the design process, the architects collaborated with Matapopore Charitable Trust, an organization whose objective is to ensure the values, aspirations and narratives of the local Ngāi Tūāhuriri people are realised throughout the recovery of Christchurch. Their influence on the design of the building is substantial—from building materials to physical orientation, there is a rich tapestry of ancestry, traditional knowledge, and culture woven throughout Tūranga.

The library, lying at the northwest corner of Wuhan Huashan Eco-City, where there originally was a wetland with abundant resources, connects to the city’s sports theme park in the east and faces closely to the Baiyang Mountain Scenic Area in the north. The design, featuring five well-proportioned, lightweight and simplified boxes scattered on the wetland, expresses a concealing and humble posture into the current ecological environment and leaves the original ecologic landscape intact as much as possible.

The comprehensive renovation of Tate Library at Ethical Culture Fieldston School (ECFS) transformed the signature 1970 building into a learning commons that is the hub for the entire campus. In support of ECFS’s mission of ethical learning, academic excellence, and progressive education, the building’s new open, spacious interior provides greater access to books, information and technology to enable multiple modes of teaching and learning. Maintaining the integrity of the original stone and concrete building, the exterior renovation includes new windows with “bird-friendly” glazing and a new main entrance facing the campus quadrangle.

Doshi, the CEPT Library is envisioned as a space for catalyzing connections between students and faculty of the various academic departments. Neutrally oriented at a central location with separate and equal entrances facing all cardinal directions, access to the building – and identification with it – is collective across the campus.
