Surf Ghana Collective creates a dynamic community space for youth in Busua, a surfing hotspot on Ghana’s western coast. The community-run lodge plugs into a network of surf schools and oceanfront lodges. The adapted single-room structure is used flexibly throughout the year and provides the first hangout spot for local youth, providing amenities such as wifi, a beach shower, and equipment storage. For large surf events, the room acts as a classroom and dormitory for visiting surfers. In the off-season, the building is rented out to cover running costs.

Spatial Solutions in Response to the Bonguisan Mountain Hill Village – The Bonguisan Mountain Hill Village is a small-scale urban fabric that has adapted to the local topography, creating a complex and disorganized landscape with a variety of buildings ranging from reinforced concrete and steel frames, which are prevalent in contemporary architecture, to wooden and masonry structures of the modern era. We wanted the Gyodong Community Center to embody the tangible and intangible values of the village while remaining in harmony with its surroundings. The design avoided the construction of large and enclosed governmental buildings and instead planned along the lines of the smallest units possible to enhance accessibility and use. The building is divided into two buildings and spaces of five programs; different shapes and exterior building materials were applied to the two divided buildings to eliminate the idea of an independent site or building complex and to appear as if they had long existed here.

A red-roofed Y-shaped pavilion is a beacon for the local community. A new community center in the inner west of Sydney, designed by Sam Crawford Architects (SCA), connects to its local heritage area and provides much-needed spaces for the local community whilst revitalizing a local suburban park. Sam Crawford, director of SCA, said: “The red bricks and terracotta roofs of the suburb were our inspiration for the materials, colors, and forms of the new community center in Hurlstone Park. It speaks to the character of these Federation buildings and interprets them in a contemporary way, making a special connection for local residents.” “Previously, an old lawn-bowls club sat on the site within Hurlstone Memorial Reserve Park, unloved and unused, reflecting changing demographics and community needs.” “The new pavilion is open for meetings, parties, talks, and other functions, providing a valuable resource for the local community.” “Connectivity was our key design driver, directing both the form and layout of the building. The soft Y shape allows multiple entry points, so the center can be approached from several different access points into the park. Its three curved sides feature large glass doors, allowing transparency, cross ventilation, and accessibility.”

Handing down memories and shaping an outdoor culture – The project site, which is located on the north side of the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, is the former location of the Hiroshima Civic Stadium, a symbol of post-war restoration. Working with the joint venture selected through the Park–PFI (Park–Private Finance Initiative) program, we formulated a policy of turning the former ballpark site into a place to stimulate activity—a place that creates lively daily activities and stimulates people to go out by shaping an outdoor culture (Osoto Bunka) for enjoying outdoor activities while handing down the deeply marked history of the site to future generations.
