Jungnimchanggo Facility / everyarchitects

The building is located on a hill in the old town boundary. The site was 55 meters long, while its width ranged from 1.5 meters to 6 meters. The difference in its elevation was 8 meters. The long and thin site faces the commercial building of Saint Joseph Apartment (one of the oldest apartments in Seoul) on the other side of the 4-meter-wide road. At a glance, the new building would look like a Mini-Me of the apartment, or it would be extended from its part. Hence, the new building has been designed focusing on the continuity of the road as a flow rather than on the building as a mass.

The City Lounge is located on Zhongshan Road, the core area of the old city of Jiaxing. The site is sandwiched among buildings of different ages and is a typical urban debris space. The project is part of the old town remodeling plan of Jiaxing and is different from the large-scale overall renewal. It introduces Jane Jacobs’ “street eye” concept into the debris space reconstruction, trying to apply the “organ style” point of renewal to arouse the public’s passion for the complex and diverse life in the old city.

Water Street is located in XiafangQiao District, Qixian, Shaoxing. It extends 800 meters from old steamer wharf in the east to the river bank of Longwang Bridge in the west, available for the trade and social life of local residents during the years the land transportation remained underdeveloped. In the era of the rapid urbanization, the water street is no longer as popular and important as it used to be, while more and more local population gets relocated. The water street has started to be hollowed out. During the preliminary investigation, we found that the architectural style from the 1980s is well preserved in the water street, but the surrounding traffic conditions are not well organized and there is no adequate public functional space. Driven by the policy for “building beautiful villages and towns”, the Qixian Government advocates the initiatives to preserve the specific historical features and expects to renovate the old water street. With satisfactory facilities and clean environment, the local government hopes to improve living and working environment for urban residents in an effort to gradually realize the local urban revival.

August 1, 2021 Alexandria Bramley 0

Jakub Szczęsny and Hadas Tuval redefine the rooftop as a public space, where city dwellers get a chance to form a community and weave new connections under a temporary canopy. Together, they created a shaded shelter on the Liebling Haus rooftop. This lightly covered space – a hybrid of a sail and a tent – invites visitors to explore the thin line separating belonging and connection from seclusion and disconnection.
