Community

The main concept was to create a space of a new quality in the urban layout of the city. The area is enlisted in the register of monuments as the surroundings of the Old and New Town. The plot is situated in the city center between Kościuszki, Sienkiewicza, and Wybickiego Streets. Originally, the hotel ‘Du Nord’ was located on this plot, later replaced with a bus station degraded after it had been decommissioned.

The Comunativa Foundation is located in the San José neighborhood. The foundation carries out social action and resistance work against the urban Macroproject, which in 2010 devastated an area of 17 neighborhoods, just over 100 hectares near the center of Manizales, Colombia. This state intervention arises from the desire to “dignify” the urban housing space, with the social cost of displacing the poorest population from the city’s centre. This TSL workshop lands on the landscapes of this “macro-disaster” as it is called in Comunativa, and carries out a program of pedagogical projects, community care and socio-spatial disputes.

Located on a rocky outcrop, jutting out into the North Atlantic, the Jubilee Pool is the largest of only five surviving sea water lidos in the UK, and an important part of the built and social fabric of Penzance. The triangular-shaped pool had fallen into a state of disrepair over the years and it was regularly under threat of closure, which would have been devastating for the local community as the pool represents a huge amount of pride in the town.

The design brief was to create a multi-utility space accommodating the activities like yoga, chantings, and lodgings with the basic kitchen and utilitarian spaces. The construction was taken care of in two phases.

MAE-AN-GEO means the home of Maesan-ri, where you can rest comfortably with plum blossoms (The name of Maesan-ri comes from the village with plum blossoms).

More than 30 years in the making, Shell Cove is a unique and expansive master-planned residential, commercial, and tourist development established in a prominent coastal location just south of Wollongong. The centerpiece is a man-made harbor boasting a 270-berth marina – the heady Waterfront Tavern envisioned as the jewel in the crown of the newly founded harbourside village. Following approval of the precinct masterplan, H&E worked in close collaboration with The Frasers Property Group and Shell Harbour Council to develop a robust concept delivering a unique and memorable anchor for the Shell Cove hub — Waterfront Tavern a welcoming refuge for residents and an appealing destination for visitors.

The pandemic has changed the relationship between housing and public space, accommodating the way we share among members and integrate as a community. Currently, after the COVID 19 sanitary emergency, we have found out the communities are resilient, reorganize, and renew the social bonds for protection.  The meeting points provide the opportunity to learn how the social dimension in micro-communities is reinforced in times of crisis.

The project deals with the reconstruction of the rectory from the 16th century (2nd phase unfinished) and the design of the social hall (1st phase completed) of the Parish Center of the Roman Catholic Church in Lidečko. Construction modifications respond to the relocation of functions within the building and adapt their availability to best suit the new requirements. The community hall conceptually closes the plot, connects its parts, and creates a space for outdoor activities. Symbolism in the concept of architecture as a process underlines the meaning and purpose of the building.
