XS House / ISA

January 13, 2020 Paula Pintos 0

Philadelphia’s urban renewal era left behind an east-west cut through the city’s urban fabric in the form of the sunken, 100-foot-wide Vine Street Expressway. Philadelphia’s Chinatown neighborhood was one of those disconnected by the expressway, with many of its formerly densely inhabited blocks sliced into odd shapes and sizes. Today, the expressway continues to divide pedestrian activity, while most of the odd-shaped leftover lots are used for surface parking. XS House rejuvenates one such leftover site, adding urban density and street life while encouraging walkable lifestyles.

Building in Travessa Alferes Malheiro / Franca Arquitectura

January 5, 2020 Daniel Tapia 0

The Alferes Malheiro Street starts at Largo Tito Fontes, showing us the central city, step by step, almost in a quiet hypnotizing thriller. The south point draws a skyline with the Trindade’s Tower over it, seeing as if the center of the city lays itself under the tower, forgetting about all the architectural and urban transformations that the city has suffered, where co-exists ruptures and interpretations of the traditional architecture. Architecturally, with the rehabilitation of the facade and the new proposal of volume, it contributes to the consolidation of the character of the street, increasing value on what concerns the height of the buildings on the street and the dominant alignment.

District 8 Home & Office / AOMO

December 31, 2019 Andreas Luco 0

Concept Design: District 8. The building is a 6 story mixed-use project, comprising of office spaces for a TV broadcast company and a penthouse residence on the top 2 floors. The program is to relocate the owner’s office to this new location along with owner’s residence on the top 2 levels.  The area of the building is designed to be just under 2,000 sq.m. and 23 building height limit to apply minimum set back since the site is very small with 2 roads around the corner. Design Approach, as usual, we try to operate and organized all the factors, such as the building functions, spaces and site context and let them play their parts.  As the result, we get a wedged gable roof shape with different height at the ridge line from split levels on the top part. We just let each parts come and play their roles and not too overwhelmed. We keep them organized with simplicity of form with multiple textures or details and materials.
