This 1960s home has been renovated by Birmingham-based architecture firm Design Initiative, which sought to return the building’s original charm, while modernising its interiors and improving circulation. Mountain Brook Residence was originally designed by Fritz Woehle, the first architect from Alabama to be awarded the title of Fellow by the American Institute of Architects (AIA)

Memorial in Alabama acknowledges violence against African Americans

A memorial and museum dedicated to the legacy of racial violence and injustice in America are set to open in Montgomery, Alabama. The National Memorial for Peace and Justice was designed by Boston-based Mass Design Group and set up by Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) – a non-profit organisation that works to advance national reconciliation around race.

Alabama architecture students convert historic bank into library for rural town

A brick bank building in Alabama dating to the early 1900s has been transformed into a community library by Rural Studio, a student design-build programme dedicated to social projects. The Newbern Library is located in a town of the same name with less than 200 residents, and was converted by fifth-year architecture students at Auburn
