On April 19th and 20th, fifth year SCI-Arc undergraduates presented their final thesis projects to panels of faculty and guest juries comprised of some of the top architects, critics, and theorists in the field – including Undergraduate Program Chair Tom Wiscombe, Undergraduate Thesis Coordinator Jenny Wu, and Special Thesis Advisor and former SCI-Arc Director Neil M. Denari. This year’s thesis advisors were Kristy Balliet, Marcelo Spina, and Peter Testa. 

The Bachelor of Architecture (B. ARCH) at the American University in Dubai was inaugurated in the fall of 2009 and much like Dubai, is young, dynamic, and has achieved considerable milestones over a short period of which NAAB accreditation is at the top. The architecture department along with the Interior Design and the Visual communication departments make up the School of Architecture, Art, and Design (SAAD), which is the only school outside of the USA to have obtained the three primary accreditations (NAAB, CIDA, and NASAD). These accreditations reflect high education standards and quality assurance of SAAD’s programs.

The final thesis

Today’s designers have inherited unprecedented global challenges. This legacy will require radically new ways to fashion the buildings, places and landscapes that harbor our diverse ways of life.

CODE – COmpetititons for DEsigners – launches “Italian Tradition Market”, a competition of ideas aiming to design the first market of handcrafted Italian excellences of Art, Craftsmanship, Food and Wine production and Areas on the remains of a 88 B.C. Roman Theater. A cash prize of € 10,000 will be awarded to winners selected by a well-renowned jury made of, among the others, Enzo Eusebi, Alfredo Häberli, Andrea Marcante (Marcante Testa), Benedetta Tagliabue (Miralles Tagliabue), Dong Gong (Vector Architects).

From short supply and high demand to a lack of affordable options, housing in Los Angeles is a complex and prominent issue that deserves the attention of local universities. As the crisis continues to evolve, architecture and architectural education are vital parts of the discussion surrounding housing equity.

​YAC – Young Architects Competitions launches “Plastic Monument”, a competition of ideas aiming to create an itinerant architectural installation. It will travel all around the world to raise awareness about the impact of plastic waste on our planet. A cash prize of € 15,000 + realization of the 1st Prize will be awarded to winners selected by a well-renowned jury made of, among the others,​ Kengo Kuma, Carlo Ratti, Italo Rota, Mandy Barker, Maria Cristina Finucci.
