Xiangmi Park, an undiscovered treasure box
Xiangmi Park is a historic place for Shenzhen standards. Originally used as an agricultural research center it was quickly swallowed by the extension of the city since the 1980s. During 35 years protected from rapid urban growth, the existence of the research facility also preserved a large lychee orchard on a hill, fish ponds, a flower market, many large trees and a palm tree avenue. Located in Shenzhen’s central Futian District, it was an undiscovered treasure box in the middle of a metropolis.

The architectural studio, UUfie, designed the new vertical circulation space in the renowned department store Printemps Haussmann in Paris, France. The project was a part of the revitalization of Printemps Haussmann to introduce a circulation from the lower ground floor up to the 9th floor. Founded in 1865, Printemps has had a long history in revolutionizing the ways of shopping. The original interior had featured an atrium with a massive spiral staircase. Sadly, much this was destroyed from disastrous fires and removed during the modernization of the building. Since then, Printemps has restored the Art Nouveau building façade and the stained glass dome, which are both recognized as historical monuments in the city of Paris. In looking forward, a new project was commenced to re-introduce a new grand atrium to equal its landmark status.

The Nantou Old Town in the city center of Shenzhen, China was founded as a city over 1,700 years ago starting from the Jin Dynasty. In the past century, the ancient town has gradually vanished, while the village was constantly expanding. The exacerbation of urbanization in Shenzhen has resulted in an intertwined layering with complex pattern of the historical town embedded in the urban village, which is again encircled by the city—“village in city, city in village”.
