From the outside, when observing it, we feel like we’ve known it all our lives. It is a little house; we have drawn it as children, we have seen it in some place, it reminds us of a rusty shed in the middle of a field. We can imagine it in many worlds. It is an icon that transports us and reminds us of home, inviting us to come in.
KAAN Architecten was commissioned by the American Battle Monuments Commission to design a Visitor Center for the only American Cemetery on Dutch soil. Guided by the landscape setting and the monumental atmosphere of the site, the building complements the serenity of this vast memorial.
Originally built in the late 1920s, the Manna Sanatorium received patients with tuberculosis who hoped to heal from the benefits of living within the arcadic woods for almost a decade. Designed by Swiss architects, it stirred away from the neoclassical current of the moment in the area. Despite the idyllic location, the introduction of penicillin in 1938 made sanatoriums obsolete, forcing the abandonment of Manna at the mercy of looting, with its parts being repurposed in nearby constructions.
In a quiet conversation, the project reinterprets elements that are on site: a house with a sloping roof, the materials, and the scale of the vegetation.
Atelier Aconcept delivered the Geneviève-de-Gaulle-Anthonioz School Group in L’Haÿ-les-Roses (Greater Paris) in September 2023. Groupe Scolaire Geneviève-de-Gaulle-Anthonioz is a program comprising ten nursery classes, fifteen elementary classes, a dojo, and a gymnasium, with a total floor area of 4,700 m2.
Villa JJ is located on a cliff on the shoreline of Stockholm’s southern archipelago. The climate here can be harsh, nature is shaped by rain and storms as much as by sun and drought. The building tradition was characterized by simple buildings, often gathered in clusters to protect each other, such as fishermen’s sheds or small farms. The houses were low, clad with wood boards, gray or almost white.
New York-based studio Civilian has overseen the interior design for the offices of Award-winning documentary production company Sandbox Films. Located in a landmarked 1920s neo-gothic skyscraper in Manhattan’s Flatiron District, the 4,200 sq ft space features a central reception area and bar, a conference space, private and open offices, production and editing suites, a mix of carefully sourced vintage and custom-designed furniture and a state-of-the-art private screening room.
