Heidelberg, the city of science and research, now has its first major dedicated congress and convention venue. The Basel-based architectural bureau Degelo Architekten has developed a characterful building that on the exterior appears compact and plain, but turns out to have a complex and many-faceted interior.
Cinemateket in Oslo is a movie theatre for classic and alternative contemporary films. The design of Cinemateket is a tribute to the good old-fashioned cinema experience, while at the same time acknowledging the movie theatre setting within a robust 1940s concrete warehouse. The material palette of oak timber, powder-coated aluminum, and glass, creates a visual dialogue with the exposed rough concrete construction of the old building. The project’s ambition is to bring back the feeling of expectation when you are going out to watch a movie.
A family resemblance. Sector E of the Athletes’ Village is first and foremost a family resemblance. As coordinator architect of the sector, CoBe has pre-written the main guidelines that govern the design of the various buildings while leaving some leeway to the individual designers. As such, the visuals of the CoBe project produced for the competition have served from the outset as reference images to represent the entire project in the sector. To ensure its total coherence, the family resemblance has been extended into the skeleton of the buildings, using a common construction method, based on a system of post-and-beams combining wood and low-carbon concrete.

Consequently, architects face the challenge and responsibility of adapting these buildings to contemporary functionalities. Opting against demolition reflects a sustainable construction approach and highlights the importance of honoring the built heritage.
The new school building for Het Element combines two pre-vocational secondary schools, three sports halls, a dojo and a language center. The allotment garden settlement “Greifenstein” next to a dead arm of the Danube River has a special charm. The first residents in the 1920s to 60s were very creative when building their bathing huts themselves. Since it is a flood area, all houses must be built on pillars. All of them were made of wood and the size was reduced to the essentials. Visitors are reminded of Peter Pan’s Neverland or beach huts on the California coast.
The Kids’ Workshop House at St.Pauli in Hamburg is a place where children can playfully explore the world of crafts. As part of the restructuring of a park, it was given a new location.
“Always along the firewall” may be a wonderful song or book title, but in this instance, it is the leitmotif of MOMM, a 205 m2 7-room apartment for which STUDIO LOES was in charge of the interior design. The residential structure from the early twentieth century is located in Berlin-Charlottenburg. The apartment’s existing construction is typical of an ancient building, with high ceilings, an angled floor plan, and a very confused, scattered spatial layout.
