Catalejo / Tololo Ugarte

Catalejo is a work of architecture that arises from its context. Upon first encountering the land, a point of interest was immediately evident: a kind of oasis of four trees over 300 years old. The rest of the land appeared as a very fertile pasture, highly sensitive to the seasons of the year. In summer, it presents a rather desert-like landscape; however, in winter and spring, meters of so-called weeds sprout from the ground, flanking the house and making it float in an environment that, at ground level, is flat, but where the vegetation provides an irregular and unexpected relief that shifts.

Rhythm of the Wood Restaurant / MAS Architects

October 31, 2024 Hana Abdel 0

The restaurant was built in Soc Son as a destination for tourists to rest and feel the surrounding nature. Surrounded by perennial pine forests next to a natural stream, the design requires careful detail so as not to disrupt the existing landscape. The design task is to create an architectural work made from local materials, creating a space close to nature but still being new in architectural language and sustainable. over time. Architect Do Minh Thai (Mas Architects) and his colleagues came up with a solution to use the same trees grown and cared for on that land to create the work “Rhythm of the Wood” to preserve the time stamp on the built location.

The intensity of megacity urbanity, where air pollution and environmental degradation are pre-conditions for design, presents a particular challenge for the creation of secure environments for education. Conceptualized as a ‘cocoon’, this project for a pre-school and kindergarten aspires to be a luminous safe haven for young children as they engage with early years learning.  Organized as a set of organic ‘cells’ of curved brick walls punctuated by circular porthole windows, the learning spaces weave a tactile ring around a courtyard.

Dapur Naga Communal Kitchen and Dining Space / Bamboo U

October 30, 2024 Hana Abdel 0

Dapur Naga is an architectural experiment in bamboo design located within the lush tropical environment of Bali. This distinctive structure serves as a communal kitchen and dining space, capable of hosting more than 50 people. The project presented significant challenges due to the sloping site, which features three major level differences, and the desire to seamlessly integrate the design with the natural environment. The main conceptual inspiration for Dapur Naga came from the graceful form of a whirling Sufi skirt, whose fluidity guided the development of the building’s undulating roof. The roof, an anticlastic surface, is carefully crafted to capture stunning views while promoting natural ventilation. This organic form creates an open and inviting space beneath, mimicking the movement of a dancer while also providing practical shelter.
