The city in general, and a South Asian megacity in particular, is a challenging place for a child. To learn and grow, she needs an environment that fosters freedom and exploration – these are hard to come by in today’s city. The Garden School in Mumbai is conceived as this protective space, holding off the oppressive conventions and constraints of the city, for a child to be free.
Situated in the mountainous region of Kamakura, a town renowned for its proximity to the sea, this apartment within a residential complex has undergone a significant transformation under the meticulous guidance of Roovice. Originally designed with a 4DK layout featuring outdated elements such as a dark kitchen and multiple small rooms, the renovation aimed to breathe modernity into the space while seamlessly integrating it with the natural beauty of the surrounding landscape, particularly enchanting during the spring bloom of Sakura trees.
The site is a north-facing small escarpment that is characterized by a large floating rock shelf, and a waterway that stems from a distant catchment and flows steadily to the coastal bay through remnant swamplands. Cabbage Tree House is a member of the hillside – a physical participant of the character of this place. It anchors with purpose and sits with logic against the hill.
The San Francisco SVRN store is a distinctive architectural project that merges the brand’s identity with the unique characteristic of its location. Situated across two disjointed buildings on a hillside, the design aims to seamlessly integrate varying floor levels, ceiling structures, and architectural foundations, in order to create a cohesive customer experience. Central to the concept is an elliptical loop that weaves through the space, translating into a series of curved walls finished in green oxidized copper, a material chosen to symbolize the passage of time. This nods to the corten steel used in the previous Chicago store of SVRN, while also creating a dynamic flow that invites customers to freely explore. The resulting spatial tension between these curved segments adds a sense of discovery and embracing, enhancing the journey through the store.
Cap Karoso Resort is a project designed for French clients on the island of Sumba, an as-yet undeveloped island in the east of Indonesia. It is set on a gently sloping beachfront land facing into the sunset.
The streets of Khar used to be lined with low rise homes set back from the street and hidden behind trees and shallow front gardens. Densification and the demand for floor space has transformed these neighbourhoods’ into rows of tall structures battling for light and air and eliminating any manner of dialogue with the street, owing to the concentration of “decorative” multi-storey parking structures at the ground level. The sea lies to the west of the site, a direction from which the harshest sun and rain originate.
The clients are four people with a keen eye for wood. They wanted to enjoy the pleasure of crafting and being together in this quiet neighborhood. A small room to play with wood was the most required element. The site must be addressed first before describing their way of creating a room. The site is located on a spot looking up at a long bridge between golf courses.
Situated in a small alley in the heart of Hue city, Ton Corner – a coffee shop that embodies an open and dynamic spirit, is inspired by the simple life of small street corners. The original small, deteriorating house was demolished to raise the foundation to prevent flooding. Since the land is leased on a short-term basis, the project is built with a steel structure with the main covering materials being corrugated iron, old wood, and tempered glass. Corrugated iron is considered a roofing material and is only used for covering industrial works. In humid, rainy climates like Hue, people use corrugated iron to cover the outside walls of their houses to prevent water seepage, However, using corrugated iron without proper aesthetic and technical treatment will cause the house to lose its original aesthetic value, even creating a shabby appearance in the urban landscape.
House B – T – two-family house for a comfortable old age – A house to live in for the rest of their lives, was the explicit request of the clients. Moreover, they loved the concrete architecture of Brutalist architect Juliaan Lampens. The result of their assignment is an aesthetic two-family house in which brutal materials are delicately combined with a particularly fine finish.
Located at 8 South 4th Street, One Domino Square is Selldorf Architects’ first residential skyscraper in the world and features connected 55-story and 39-story towers covered in shimmering porcelain tiles, giving it an alluring complexity. The façade acts as a mirror capturing and reflecting the site’s remarkable light, the ever-changing water of the East River, and the dynamic natural surroundings of Domino Park. The project’s eye-catching design and two towers place it in dialogue with the skylines of Brooklyn and Manhattan and the rest of the Domino Sugar Factory site. The Condominium tower also boasts sweeping and unmatched views of the Manhattan skyline, the Statue of Liberty, and the Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Williamsburg bridges.
