Piil Tree House Retreat / Arsenit

October 6, 2023 Hadir Al Koshta 0

Piil, named after the Estonian word ‘piiluma’ for ‘peeking/looking’ is an elegant, 9m tall pre-fabricated treehouse with a compact plan, elevated to minimize the ground-level presence and indeed, provides generous views out to the vast Estonian wilderness. The 19m2 structure stands on one ‘leg’, suspended over a terrace to create an open-air ‘living room’ sheltered from rain and snow. A discreet door provides access inside, with the cladding layer peeled back to reveal the metal structure supporting the impressive cantilever. Both the ‘leg’ and the accommodation modules above act as large steel trusses — made in-house by the Client, metal manufacturer Levstal Group. Wrapped in hit-and-miss pine cladding, the ‘leg’ contains a staircase, services, and a sports equipment store. The raised bedroom provides greater seclusion, a unique vantage point, and an opportunity to rest among tree branches.

Queen’s Business School / TODD Architects

Queen’s University’s new Business School building sits within its Riddel Hall campus, in south Belfast in front of the Grade II listed Riddel Hall building and enclosed by mature woodland. In 2017, due to its continued growth, the School identified a need to expand its facilities. Its vision was for a state-of-the-art facility that would both respond to the changing educational needs of its rapidly growing post-graduate community and be a transitional link between education and employment. In addition, the School was keen to explore how the “in-between” spaces linking teaching and learning accommodation could be more than just circulation corridors, encouraging thinking on the introduction of informal study and break-out areas.

Saman Satellite Office Building / Hooba Design

October 3, 2023 Hadir Al Koshta 0

Being handed a half-finished project can be one of the most challenging tasks offered to an architect. The Saman Satellite project was offered to us when its structure was halfway established in the Technology campus park, where a new definition of office functionality began to emerge. The existing state of the skeleton and project path had deviated from the original architectural plan designed by another architectural firm due to the decision of the stakeholder. They have also changed its overall structure. Also, the client decided to add new spaces to the existing skeleton. For us, the main goal in carrying out this project was to create a culture of cooperation to advance the hybrid design as the outcome of the two architectural firms. The new idea for the project was to evolve the concept of its previous structure and design to create new potentials with another thought for the project to reach aligned results. In such projects, where the initial designer has completed a part of the work, usually, when another architect accepts to carry out the rest of the procedure, the step is not taken to continue and develop the initial idea. Therefore, the outcome will vary from the initial idea. Our design policy was to direct the direction of maintaining the overall character and creating a complementary potential. To do so, we have taken several approaches.

Mount Sharp Residence / Matt Fajkus Architecture

After years of weekend visits and time spent getting to know their site, the client’s main charge was to realize a house that would allow them to use and enjoy the land to its fullest. Located in the rolling landscape of Wimberley, Texas, it was only natural to take advantage of the miniature plateaus contained within the 22-acre lot. These “land shelves” span across the site in the east-west direction making them an ideal platform for a house that takes advantage of both solar and wind orientation.

Exelmans Michel-Ange Building / Stefan Architecture

October 3, 2023 Hadir Al Koshta 0

Nestled in the heart of the historic 16th arrondissement of Paris, at the intersection of Boulevard Exelmans and Rue Michel-Ange, this ten-story building occupies a privileged position within a corner plot. On one side, it’s next to a six-story Parisian-style building dating back to 1912, designed by the architect Lucien Demenais. On the other side, a ten-story building, designed by Pierre Puccinelli built in 1972, presents a dynamic composition with protruding volumes onto the street. The true complexity of this project lies in creating an architectural template that restores a harmonious continuity between these two entities.
