BL 2 House – Hammer Cabin / UMWELT

October 3, 2018 Diego Hernández 0

The BL II house or “Hammer Cabin”, as the owners call it, has an area of 32 square meters and is composed of an open space with a mezzanine room and a bathroom with exterior access. The house works as an independent cabin for guests or for rental. Therefore both its position on the lot and its configuration in plant and section establish privacy relations with respect to the main house and also the necessary climatic protection. The northern and southern elevations are opaque for wind and rain protection while the west façade opens towards the ocean sheltering from the sun by an eaves. The main structure of the walls is projected on the terrace enhancing its use, appropriation and protection.

BL1 is a house for a young family that decided to move from the capital to the beach of Cáhuil. It is not a second home for resting or escaping during the weekends but the possibility of transforming their metropolitan lifestyle to a more informal and rural one, with a direct and constant contact with the natural environment.

By coincidence when looking for a larger flat, the art-loving clients came across a plot with an 8-car underground garage on the island Lidingö, just outside Stockholm. Apart from the submerged garage, the plot was empty. This was not what they were looking for, yet it felt just right – soon a dream of a house with an integrated gallery started to form.

75% of Vietnam’s population now lives mainly on agricultural production in rural areas; however, rapid industrialization and urbanization in the past 20 years has resulted in a loss of millions of hectares of agricultural land, leaving nearly three million workers unemployed. In the meantime, the country’s population has increased by more than 15 million people, which results in a high housing demand. This has then entailed massive waves of construction and sprawl land encroachments in rural areas and from other vulnerable communities. As a result, the living environment and natural habitat in these areas have been seriously contaminated and impaired, thus gradually disrupting the relationship between Humans and Humans and between Humans and Nature in the context of increasingly severe climate change.
