Perhaps the only distinction between objects and things resides in their scale. Closer to any natural thing, in its ambiguous scale, this small building is more than a hut but less than a house: it is a cottage. As an opaque block, a monolithic object heavily anchored at the edge of a cliff, it is facing a sea-lion reserve on the Pacific Ocean.

Surrounded by many residential buildings, a school and an area dedicated for temporary events with a football stadium and an Olympic pool, the new police station is situated at the junction between different mixed functions, sometimes calm, sometimes subjected to important happenings. It was essential to take this site’s characteristic into account before proposing a new face for the developing neighbourhood.

De La Canardière Residence / BOOM TOWN

This residence was designed to enable a sister and brother to meet as a family on special occasions and to unwind in contact with nature. This project sprouted along the shores of a lake up in the Laurentians in a wooded area with a significantly consistent slope. This elevation, which offers a bird’s eye view of the lake, is the backbone for the development of this architectural concept—grasping hold of the land through the blending of two areas intersecting one another. The parcelling out of its shapes made its integration with the landscape possible. Its establishment forms part of a circuit throughout a site where paths extend internally, creating views, such as observation posts towards the surrounding landscape.

The bones that compose the multi-purpose barn at Critter Creek had a previous life as the owners’ home. After sheltering the homeowners for two decades, the structure was initially slated for demolition to make way for the family’s new home. Instead, the firm and client decided to repurpose and relocate the existing structure, preserving the spirit and memory embedded in this place.

The architectural objective was to achieve the maximal optimization of land which is 200 square metres (2,152 square feet), which would promote cohabitation as a family and at the same time, offer intimate spaces with the privacy required for each of the family’s daily activities, taking care of the relationship with the exterior, so the privacy character is achieved.
