LADPRAO 80 House / Black Pencils Studio

Ladprao 80 house is erected from existing structures of two houses, first is rebuilt to be the double volume living area, and second is kept to be the service function behind the parking garage. For the first, super structure was demolished and replaced with new steel structure. The extension of the main building is built surrounding the living area in L-shape to be four bedrooms on the 2ndand the 3rd floor.

This is a dramatic transformation of a small, semi-detached Victorian house. Despite being arranged over three floors, it was so shallow in depth that the proportions were cottage like.

The site is located in a condominium at 45km north of São Paulo. Its steep topography with a slope of approximately 15m from the entrance to the end of the plot, where there’s a privileged view of part of the native forest Serra dos Cristais.

The rooms making up this Old Jaffa apartment came together over hundreds of years – each with its own character and ground level. Refurbishing presented an opportunity to unite the rooms into one whole and in particular, to illuminate and brighten the dim space by opening it up toward the sea.

Sydney’s planners are considering the return of the terraced house, or row house, as a favoured residential building type.  It is believed the terrace could be one solution to addressing housing affordability; by allowing the subdivision of standard quarter acre blocks of land into narrow strips and building adjoining two-three storey dwellings.

A Garden Pavilion in Zurich / Oliv Brunner Volk Architekten

The pavilion is situated in the garden of a villa from the 1920s, surrounded by old trees and dense foliage. The two-storey structure leaves a minimal footprint, with its larger upper floor sitting on the smaller ground floor, cantilevering on all sides. In plan it takes the shape of an irregular pentagon, fitting into the corner of the site, minimizing the appearance of the pavilion and maximizing the views from inside.

University Library / OFFICE Kersten Geers David Van Severen

The new library for the faculty of Architecture and Urbanism of the University of Ghent can be considered a large, pavillion-like piece of furniture, inserted under the bacony of the existing Physics hall. The accessible, three-storied cupboard forms a complete perimeter around the central, atrium-like space, enforcing its monumental scale. Both the lendable collection as well as the more precious books which can only be consulted, are presented visibly around it.
