The design draws inspiration from Heston’s dish ‘Sound of the sea’, the dish composes the sound of sea wave audible through magnifying the echoes within the sea shell and the olfactory experience of smelling the sea water, Heston aims to heighten the senses associated with dining in order to enhance the innate quality of the ingredients.

The house is located in the heart of Vila Madalena, known as a bohemian district with great concentration area of artists and designers studios and homes.

This land is a class 2 general residential area, so an architect can build a building with a 60% the building to-land ratio and a 200% floor area ratio. It is common to design a three-story building with a 60% building-to-land ratio and to design the fourth floor with a 20% building-to-land-ratio. However, the land area (142m2) was so small that 20% of the area was only 28.4m2. It was important to find alternatives to look for a maximum floor area ratio to meet what the building owner required without any loss.

This design of a new family home, located on a tight site off a narrow laneway in Dublin City Centre, responds to its restricted context by creating a central courtyard to maximise natural light and spatial quality. By splitting the plan into two main spatial volumes, the open courtyard allows the linking areas to benefit from dual aspect and a visual dialogue that contains a very carefully considered palette of colours and materials.
