Atour Village Public Restroom / GN Architects

May 19, 2022 Collin Chen 0

In Atour Village town square, the sight is captured by three themed buildings, leaving no independent space for the public restroom. Initially, the owner just wanted this feature, and it could appear inside any building, or be incorporated with the garage overhead. The starting point of most constructions is efficiency, to distinguish the majority and minority, the protagonist and the background, and then allocate the cost and design workforce, which was also a problem we were worried about. Because of the maintenance cost and site itself, most of the scenic bathrooms lack a bright and clean experience. However, we found in the survey data of some scenic spots that tourists’ complaints about restrooms are second only to the cost-effectiveness of tickets. The construction and management of public restrooms is a neglected bug in cities and cultural tourism scenic spots. We hope to solve this problem here.

Community center. What is a “community center”? Is it a hut constructed of wood? Can simply a tree fulfill the requirement? When it comes to “gathering”, it should not be constrained by the frame of how a space is defined. Therefore, the clear boundary formed by walls is not necessary when defining a culture center.

GRiD / SPARK

May 17, 2022 Collin Chen 0

SPARK has a reputation for the innovative transformation of buildings such as Clarke Quay and Starhill Gallery.GRiD is the next chapter in this narrative. A youth-focused mall and education hub sits at the heart of Singapore’s Selegie Arts District. Sandwiched between the adjacent School of the Arts (SOTA) and several time-worn shopping malls. GRiD is a great example of the vibrant retrofitting of an existing building that extends its community relevance through positive reuse rather than wholesale demolition and re-construction. The metamorphosis of GRiD’s street corner into a “beacon” and attractor as well as housing an increased quantum of high revenue-generating F+B units is SPARK’s signature gesture and a cultural “nod” to the night-time luminosity of the local shophouses. A new ‘social stair’, a key component of the dynamic new corner is located opposite SOTA driving footfall to “food joints” in the basement. The stair is the place to relax with friends, watch onscreen shows or enjoy live performances by GRiD’s arts-focused tenants. The corner shops and social stairs have become a vibrant digital generation-friendly “Instagrammer” canvas for content creators and experience seekers. The GRiD has been deliberately designed to stand out from its neighbors. The energy of the exterior is carried into the interior spaces, redolent of a post-industrial aesthetic with neon lights and supersized utilitarian graphics.

Huzhou Urban Planning Exhibition Museum / Perkins and Will

A Gem on the Historical Silk Route. Situated on the southern banks of Tai Lake with the city of Shanghai to the east, the historic city of Huzhou is well-known as one of the birthplaces of silk cultivation. Around 60 years ago, a great number of silk artifacts were discovered on the outskirts of Huzhou, dating back to 4,000 years ago. Today, the silk and textile industries still play an important role in Huzhou’s overall economic development. As the only city in the region to reference Tai Lake in its name. Perkins&Will envisioned an urban planning exhibition museum for Huzhou inspired by the fluidity of water and the texture of silk. With a floor area of 15,600 square meters, the building houses a collection of exhibition halls, offices, a conference center, and educational classrooms. The nature park and lake surrounding the museum attract nearby residents, creating an active cultural and community gathering place. Located between the CBD and the Tai Lake Holiday Resort Area, the project is a key component of Huzhou’s Olympic Sports Center and Wetlands Park. Set within a lush green landscape with a view of the scenic mountains nearby, the museum is a prominent cultural landmark within the area.

The project is located in the OCT Loft, Shenzhen, Guangdong Province. The function is a space for the owners to meet friends, read and write, and also a gallery open to the public. Due to the composite character used: both private space and a public gallery, the renovation of the space mainly consider two factors: the relationship between the space and the owner and the relationship between the space and the exhibition.

HAYDON Nanjing Store / DOMANI

May 10, 2022 Collin Chen 0

HAYDON, an emerging brand in the high-end multi-brand cosmetics retailer favored by iconic venture capitalists, has been expanding its markets from the most first-tier cities in China at an astonishing speed since 2020 and has invited DOMANI to build the first store in Nanjing. The design concept is sourced from pure literature and echoed a wide creative perspective ranging from Wang Xiaobo’s The Green-Haired Sea Monster(1997) to the trendy acid visual style in the 2020s. Its hazy and luscious LSD fantasy challenges the boundaries of beauty and desire, and it’s rational while the rebellious tone is in line with the structural changes in Chinese retail consumers.

The modern busy world is full of vague encounters and anxiety, city life makes people impatient and restless. But people need to keep a pure mind to find inner peace. The journey begins with the first step, but our spirit is weak. Health therapy and foot massage can help the body and mind to relax, and free the spirit. Perhaps only by feeling content with “Fan Qiu” can one truly gain inner freedom. This is an attempt to explore the clash between traditional industry and exploration. We have always been contemplating depth and uniqueness.

Boundless Theater of Egret Bay / Beijing Guanzhuan Landscape Planning and Design Institution

Egret Bay art museum is located in Rizhao, Shandong Province. It is located at the east foot of Wulian mountain, a famous Buddhist mountain. Mr. Su Dongpo visited the mountain many times during the reign of the governor of Mizhou, and left a good sentence of “its beauty does not reduce the wild geese”. The construction concept of the town is to “reshape the relationship between man and nature”. On a land area of 10000 mu, it combines the aesthetic space with the natural landscape and various business forms. After more than ten years of construction, it seems to be an ideal place for people to live. In the early spring of this year, Mr. Xu qunde, the founder of egret Bay, went on an outing with me. I talked to him about a building I had built before. There was a process photo. In the picture, there was a woven curved steel mesh floating lightly in the woods hidden by mist. Seeing this picture, Mr. Xu immediately said that there was a place in egret bay where one could be woven, which was located in the cherry blossom Valley mentioned above. Mr. Xu wants to build a building in the center of Cherry Valley as a place for music, dance, drama, and other artistic activities. He described to me that his ideal state is “nature is the best”, the cherry tree is the main body, and the architecture is hidden in it. The two form a perfect relationship. As I understand it, this building is like a small thatched canopy hidden in deep mountains and lakes in Chinese landscape painting, facing the landscape with an elegant attitude, and taking nature as the soul.

Elderly-friendly Residential Renovation / MONOARCHI

May 8, 2022 Collin Chen 0

Located in a community built in the 1980s on the county border of Fenyi, Jiangxi, the old house has been standing there for over forty years. Time stands still in the community while the world outside has undergone radical changes. The house had been extended mildly several times over the years, but it is left behind by the time and a huge disconnect appears between the interior space quality and modern life. Lack of daylight and poor ventilation in the interior pose relevant safety concerns for the house owner who is of old age. Thus, improving the quality of life in the old house within a limited budget is set to be the key target of the project.

XC273 by XCOMMONS / dongqi Design

May 6, 2022 Collin Chen 0

Situated in the heart of Shanghai city, the three-story old factory that dongqi Design was commissioned to renovate presents itself as a historical ruin where the raw structure was truly exposed in all its magnificence. Conscious of this beauty, dongqi Design developed its own approach that enhances the peculiar characteristics of the building by creating a contrast between the old and new finish materials for this new fashion and art hub that is going to break the rules of the retail experience. The presence of three voids inside the space allowed the studio to develop an internal circulation system without a dead-end point. In the plans, it is possible to see how the deep study of the functions and the space could create a continuous internal flow enabled by different paths, allowing visitors to have a unique spatial experience filled with surprises, discoveries, and unfolding of the space itself.
