Re-Defining of the Small Wild Goose Pagoda Historical District / AECOM

Design Background. The Small Wild Goose Pagoda in Xi’an was built in the Jinglong period of the Tang Dynasty. The thousand-year-old pagoda records the cultural memory of Chang’an City. However, the area where it is located has gradually declined from the historically prosperous core of the Tang Dynasty capital to an old urban area that is not in harmony with the development of surrounding modern communities. Therefore, how to balance urban development, urban regeneration, and the protection of historical and cultural heritage has become the first priority of design.

The Beijing International Theatre Center / BIAD Huyue Studio

The Beijing International Theatre Center is an expansion project of the Beijing People’s Art Theatre (BPAT), located on the premises of the latter in Wangfujing Street, Dongcheng District, on the east side of the Capitol Theater. With a range of functions including drama performance, artistic creation, rehearsal, display, machine room, and parking。

Longyan Workers’ Cultural Palace / Tianjin HHDesign

The project is located in a triangular site in the Xinluo District of Longyan City, with a pleasant view of a creek in the southwest. Over the Liannan Road to the north and Donghuan Road to the east, high-rise residential areas of low quality are adjacent to the site. Workers Cultural Center stretches from Liannan Road where Building 1 sits for professional skills training including a staff service hall, training classrooms, various exhibition halls, and general union office, to Donghuan Road where Building 2 sits for cultural and sports activities equipped with A area (indoor basketball court, table tennis court, yoga fitness room) and B area (staff cinema and conference hall). The two buildings are laid out in L-shape, enclosing a workers’ cultural square integrated with the Dongshan Wetland Park.

The Wall Maze of Vi Park / XING DESIGN

Vi PARK, formerly known as Shanghai Greater China Zhengtai Rubber Factory, is located at 1391 Humin Road, Minhang District, Shanghai. In 2019, tripartite cooperation among Huayi Chemical Industry, Shanghai Vanke, and Minhang Longsheng decided to transform it into a comprehensive office park. We created a “labyrinth” on the façade, connecting several office terraces unexpectedly to each other, breaking the order of office floor compartments and creating a new social scene.

Sugar Hall / guò bàn er

The 500-square-meter former storage hall for granulated sugar, now dubbed “Bonbon Town,” is located on the former Yu Lan Sugar Factory grounds in an up-and-coming industrial district of Zhangzhou, China. Tasked with transforming the storage building with little to no daylight into an event venue with sufficient sunlight, the architects placed a series of curated white volumes into the space, functioning as daylight cannons while providing room to fulfill the new program requirements.

Sanya Haitang Bay Medical and Healthcare Demonstration Center / line+

In the post-real estate era, the regional comprehensive development mode guided by the health industry in a broad sense is becoming a blue ocean to be excavated. In the context of format iteration, the definition of architectural type with a single function has gradually failed. We try to find a kind of flexible space to accommodate the needs of different scenes, blur the clear boundary between medical facilities and hotels, and accommodate the diverse scenes of health and vacation. We will create a landscaped courtyard in a tropical climate to build a new model of future medical and healthcare that responds to the transformation needs of the times. —— Fanhao Meng

Duan Wu Community / ZAOZUO ARCHITECTURE STUDIO

This project serves as a community for relocated suburban residents, which includes 400 households from six nearby villages. Phase 1 of the project was completed in 2021, as villagers moved in and a variety of small businesses started to bloom, a sense of community has formed spontaneously.

Peiping Machine Taproom / ATLAS

Craft beer is a product that benefits from modern micro-craftsmanship, it emphasizes independence, niche, and tradition. Being different from industrial beer that pursues mass production, it pays more attention to local development, technological innovation, and brand personality. Peiping Machine is a craft brewing brand dedicated to the integration of pure brewing quality and local culture renovation. In order to achieve this internal consistency and truly build the “factory”, we carefully studied the entire process of beer brewing, and concerned focused on planning the changes of “raw material – primary processing – saccharification – fermentation – Canning – storage and refrigeration – production”. Taking advantage of the site’s own physical condition, it achieved effective organization and implementation of the “beer factory production line” concept.

Northwest Visitor Centre / Atelier Z+

Jiabei Country Park is one of the seven-country parks planned in the first phase in Shanghai. It is built in the northwest of the central areas in Jiading District. Its total planning area is 14km² of which 7.39km² are so far completed and open to the public. Based on original farmland, woods, and a network of canals, this park provides agritourism, rural tourism, ecological wellness resorts, land conservation, and science education. The Northwest Visitor Centre is one of the three visitor centers in the park. It is located the southeast inside the No.2 entrance, with the main road on the east and a small river to the north. The location is the former site of Xu Qin Village Committee, a traditional U-shaped compound built in the 1990s with a double-pitch roof and red tiles. It is a brick-concrete structure building with a concrete cornice and attic made of prefabricated concrete board. There is a two-story building in the north wing, a single-story building in the west, south, and east wing, with a quite open area in the east of the courtyard.
