BO Space / WJ Design

January 21, 2019 Collin Chen 0

BO Space is located in HE Park where used to be an old industry site and now a culture & innovation gathering place in Xixi Wetland in Hangzhou. In the designer’s view, the city is expanding way to fast that we are losing the old imprint of our city while we are losing our culture as well. Buildings are getting old, but we can keep its vitality through a design and transformation. Bo Space is not just a restaurant bar but also a complex space. It does not only provide people a place to stay but also presents a way of living. People can find out what they really like here, even if it is just a ray of sunshine, a picture show, a good meal, a slow pace, or a way back to life.

Yangzhou Ideen Creativity Community / PROJECT

Intro
We were deeply shocked the first time when we met the original building. The abandoned 3-storey archaized building stands quietly in the middle of busy urban road/ commercial space in the north and lively Dawang temple/ public plaza along the canal in the south, cutting off any connection in between. The interior was dominated by rough concrete structure and walls added from different time, which block most of the natural light, so the interior was mainly hidden in darkness. There are a series of courtyards in the 2nd and 3rd floor, surprisingly bringing some light in to create some dramatic moments, which is the unexpected highlights of the building.

The Renovation of JiJiaDun Village Center / Yzscape

January 13, 2019 Collin Chen 0

Confliction Between the Temperament of Original Bases
Built in the 1990s, the village committee building has a double-slope roof and two story reinforced concrete frame structures. On the east side there is a public toilet that was added later. The ridge is ten meters above the ground and is the tallest building in the entire village. The village committee building before the renovation, like most government buildings, has a compact layout and a plain appearance. Although traditional roof tile is used on the roof, the shape of the boxy square is quite different from the Jiangnan Water Village. in particular, the building is surrounded by eight-meter-high walls. There are areas inside and outside the building that go straight up and down. There is not a positive space for people to sit down. Ironically, as the only public building in the village, it created no public space. The spatial power relations of the village committee building are simple and clear. The majestic and tall buildings make people standing in front of them seem insignificant.

Teahouse in Jiuxing Village / gad · line+ studio + Greenton Architecture Design

January 11, 2019 Collin Chen 0

In the typical rural landscape environment of the south of the Yangtze River, line+ creates a public space in the scenic spot. Through the dispelling of volume and the rethinking of the materials, the deep involvement of the construction makes the relationship between architecture and the environment an intriguing intimacy. Tradition and modernity, thick and light, dispelling and upright, seem to be pairs of opposite and contradictory words, but they are considered and presented in the same architectural project.
