Cutting Space / zohome

February 26, 2019 Collin Chen 0

This was a design planning project for Aufait Hair Salon in an old-style apartment in Taipei. During the communication process with the hair stylists, we gained a full understanding of the usage and configuration of space required for hair styling. In the 97 square-meter space, we regard hair styling as a means of expressing the layout of space; thus, we re-tailored, thinned-out, and re-allocated the possibilities of the salon space from the inside out.

The Living Lab, Traditional Clan Estate / HAO Design

February 25, 2019 Collin Chen 0

In this project, the home is more than 60 years old. Although it is a three-sectioned compound, it is not laid out in a traditional “embracing the courtyard” fashion. This reflects the fact that the previous home owners built it up section by section based on the clan’s economic means. It is close to Pingtung railway station. Because this part of town was developed earlier in history and the demographics have aged over time, the homes in this area include a mix of independent houses, makeshift temporary houses and three-sectioned compounds. From the rooftop, one can observe the passage of time through the style of buildings. When we first started the project, the roof was caving in like ruins. My task was to figure out how to “adapt” the home to a modern lifestyle without tearing down most of the walls, even though some of them were already crumbled.

Shih Chien University Building B / Shen Ting Tseng architects

February 22, 2019 Collin Chen 0

Shih Chien University Building-B was completed in 1975 for the Art & Design Department, and because of the Modernism influences during that period the building has a very clear column-beam structural grid system, horizontal window opening and vertical space linking all three levels of building volumes.  After a few previous refurbishments, the existing architectural form has gradually lost its intended connection between the inside and outside, and its original sense of the architectural horizon is diminished.

February 20, 2019 Collin Chen 0

The Xinsu Group Research and Development (hereinafter referred to as “R&D “) Center is the third project designed by Minax Architects for the same owner. In this design, we had the chance to grasp even more accurately the owner’s requests and taste , also combining the new building with the corporate culture. As the R&D center of the company, the building undertakes the technical research and development work of the whole group. Xinsu Group has just completed a new large-scale merger and acquisition. The R&D departments originally belonging to different companies must work together in this new R&D center. Therefore, achieving smooth communication between R&D personnel of different departments through harmonious coexistence of architecture, landscape and environment has become the focus of this design.

time+space=experience
The work of an architect is actually an experimental career about time and space. From infinite concept sketches to implementation, from the various minds of people involved to the choice of one idea, from the light to the atmosphere of a building, from the sketch paper to the computer hard drive left with all the records about the design process; the completed buildings end up providing a physical object or place that make the architect’s ideas come to life for the user to experience and leave a trace on their life.
