alchemy 38 layers wood, stone, and light into a ritual-driven wellness retreat in new york

a sequence of spaces links mind, body, and spirit inside ALCHEMY 38

ALCHEMY 38 is a wellness retreat designed by Yasmine Ammar, located in Manhattan’s Upper East Side. The project is conceived as a sequence of spatial thresholds that organize therapeutic, architectural, and ritual functions within a continuous interior environment.

The concept is informed by the idea of neurogenesis, translating the formation of new neural connections into a spatial system that links mind, body, and environment. The name ‘38’ reflects this structure, where three corresponds to the triad of mind, body, and spirit, and eight refers to cyclical processes of renewal. Together, these elements define a framework based on transition and continuity between different spatial and experiential states.

The design is developed in dialogue with the geometry of Manhattan’s urban grid, while incorporating references from Japanese and Scandinavian design traditions. This combination results in a restrained material and spatial language that emphasizes clarity, proportion, and tactility.

wood, stone, lime plaster, and concrete shape a layered space

Material choices include wood, stone, lime plaster, concrete, and mineral-based finishes, selected for their durability and sensory qualities. These are integrated with lighting systems and discreet smart technologies that regulate atmosphere, circadian rhythm, and thermal conditions. Construction focuses on precise detailing, continuous surfaces, and the integration of handcrafted and digitally fabricated elements.

The program is organized across approximately 20,000 sqft and distributed over three levels. It consists of eight primary rooms dedicated to therapeutic rituals and three additional social spaces. Each area functions as part of a sequential spatial system, guiding movement through phases of release, restoration, and re-engagement. ALCHEMY 38 wellness retreat project, conceived by designer Yasmine Ammar, positions spatial design as an active component in shaping therapeutic experience through material, light, and sequence.
