Beyond the Street: Climate, Commerce, and the Evolution of Hong Kong’s Elevated Networks

April 17, 2026 Jonathan Yeung 0

In 2012, Cities Without Ground: A Hong Kong Guidebook offered one of the clearest documentations of a condition that many residents experience intuitively but rarely name: Hong Kong’s dependence on elevated, second-storey urbanism. Through drawings and careful mapping, the book captured how the city’s pedestrian networks are routinely lifted above the street—separating people from traffic, extending commercial frontage beyond ground level, and negotiating a hilly topography where “flat” circulation is often an engineered achievement. Since its publication, these systems have only grown in prominence—not only for their sheer spatial complexity, but for the way they recast public space as something continuous yet selective, connective yet curated.

Shand Road / Ys Housing

April 17, 2026 Pilar Caballero 0

Ys Housing’s pilot project, Shand Road, refines medium-density infill housing in Melbourne’s middle suburbs. Four two- and three-bedroom townhouses occupy a typical suburban block, testing a repeatable model for the 15-metre frontage lot type common in residential suburbs. The project prioritises design quality, environmental performance, and affordability. As both architect and developer, Ys Housing works across design, cost, and delivery. This integrated model allows housing to be more considered than volume-built products, while remaining more accessible than bespoke architecture.

Cycle&Cycle Stone-oven Bakery Restaurant / Tens Atelier + FANAF

April 17, 2026 Valeria Silva 0

The project site is located in the western mountainous area of Shangwang Village, Shaoxing, Zhejiang Province, hidden among bamboo groves and farmlands. The building was originally constructed in the 1970s as a rural auditorium supporting Nixon’s visit to China, carrying a distinct historical background. In 2022, Cycle&Cycle acquired the usage rights to the building and commissioned FANAF to carry out renovation and reconstruction. After completing the initial updates to the building and landscape, the project was temporarily put on hold due to overall environmental changes. It was not until 2025, when the brand decided to transform it into a rural stone‑kiln workshop, that the project was restarted, with the interior redesign entrusted to Tens Atelier.
