The Mill House / Estudio Vilablanch

In La Vilella Baixa, this old hydraulic mill stands on a 3,000 m² plot surrounded by vineyards and olive trees. The disused mill, located along the Lloá road bordering the Montsant River, was transformed by our studio into a contemporary 200 m² home, through a project that stayed connected to its past and the nature surrounding it.

The project is located in the Italian-style district of Tianjin, where century-old Italian architectural clusters characterized by red bricks stand. The original site of Tianjin Zhongshuge was a modern building that detached from the surrounding classical context. The reconstruction demands an integrated consideration of architecture and interior design, fitting into the cultural atmosphere of the district. Red bricks, as an important constructive material in Italian classical architecture, have become a necessary design element for this project.

Chain Reaction: Mastering Kinetic Architecture with Aluminum Links

October 31, 2024 Tatevik Avetisyan 0

Here’s a question: what part of a building stands firm and unmovable? While walls, floors, and structural supports may spring to mind, in today’s world, even architecture is getting in on the action. Movable walls, sliding doors, and retractable roofs were the early ambassadors of kinetic design, allowing structures to become more flexible without losing strength. What started in ancient civilizations has now evolved into a futuristic dance between practicality and nature. Buildings aren’t just set in stone anymore—they’re evolving, responding, and adapting.

The intensity of megacity urbanity, where air pollution and environmental degradation are pre-conditions for design, presents a particular challenge for the creation of secure environments for education. Conceptualized as a ‘cocoon’, this project for a pre-school and kindergarten aspires to be a luminous safe haven for young children as they engage with early years learning.  Organized as a set of organic ‘cells’ of curved brick walls punctuated by circular porthole windows, the learning spaces weave a tactile ring around a courtyard.

Au Loin Residence / GGR architectes

October 30, 2024 Hadir Al Koshta 0

The residence Au Loin is part of a new development zone on the outskirts of Toulouse. It is intended to be representative of innovation in construction and the housing of tomorrow. However, it doesn’t invent anything. It also does not revolutionize the way of living. The primary concern of the residence Au Loin is to offer a new landscape for each of its homes. To achieve this, it is shaped by simple siting principles and architectural choices that have stood the test of time. Reflecting the values of the GGR agency, the Au Loin project aims to be economical, sustainable, timeless, and human-centered. Because a city cannot be built solely on achievements. The project aims to take advantage of the landscape qualities of a complex urban context: a narrow corner plot, located on the edge of the main axis of a developing neighborhood and bordering a wooded area and a ‘wild’ stream. To achieve this, two buildings are constructed along the street to protect the common garden from road nuisances. A large building rises to the maximum permitted height to free up the ground and allow the inner courtyard to breathe. A smaller building is lowered to engage in dialogue with the neighboring residential fabric. The space between the two buildings forms the entrance to the residence. The void of the central garden connects with the void of the retention basin of the development zone, giving residents the impression that their common garden is immense.
