Beyond Green Architecture: 5 Middle Eastern Projects Redefining Landscape Design

September 3, 2024 Nour Fakharany 0

Landscape architecture has traditionally been associated with lush greenery, rooted in the historical development of gardens and parks as spaces that bring nature into urban areas. This connection to greenery is deeply ingrained in the origins of the field, where the creation of verdant retreats was seen as both aesthetically pleasing and beneficial to human well-being. However, in regions like the Middle East, where water scarcity and harsh climates are more prevalent, there is a growing trend toward using local materials such as sand, stone, minerals, and indigenous plants. This shift reflects a more sustainable approach, reimagining landscape architecture to align with the environmental and cultural contexts of the region.

CAMINHA Market / LOFTSPACE + Tiago Sousa

The market is a point of exchange, buying and selling, a meeting point, or even, nowadays, a point of cultural interest. In these polyvalences of functions and definitions, it is concluded that the market, when functional, is a point of reference in a place. It is thus, in the importance of function, form or scale that urban space is designed and constructed. The current Caminha market is not integrated into the site nor does it stand out due to its function.

The site is located at the boundary where residential areas meet natural green spaces in Daera-ri, Gijang-eup, Busan. Although quite distant from the center of Busan, it benefits from its strategic position within Gijang County, offering easy access to the Busan urban area. Consequently, many factories and warehouses have historically coexisted with residential neighborhoods here. However, with the opening of Gijang Station on the Donghae Nambu Line, public transportation has improved, enhancing the livability of the area. This, along with rising land prices, has led to the demolition of many factories and warehouses, making way for multi-family and multi-unit housing and accompanying neighborhood facilities. Considering this urban context, we aimed to design a small-scale building that fosters a residential-friendly atmosphere, replacing the industrial structures.

“They say that flowers are all words that the earth says” Fernando Pessoa.
Like a flower, the house “patios of petals” is fed and protected from the sun. It touches the floor simply, with a large “U” glazing. An internal curved structural wall that together with the heart of the house (the stairs), builds its interior. The flower petals embrace the entire upper floor. In its organicist movement , the openings, the patios appear. To reinforce their presence, we limit the use to three materials: White, which draws the petals, aluminum and glass. Thus, the petals gain more expression, more “body”.
