The Mies Crown Hall American Prize (MCHAP), has just announced the four finalists for the 2024 prize. In the latest stage of its fifth cycle, this prize for emerging practices have been selected from a pool of over fifty nominated works designed by architects in the first decade of their practice. The award recognizes the best-built works of architecture in the Americas completed between 2020 and 2023.
Ephemeral architectures, characterized by their temporary and flexible nature, have emerged as powerful tools for revitalizing urban spaces and fostering architectural creativity. These transient installations transform public areas, engaging communities, and prompting reflections on the potential futures of our cities. By temporarily transforming environments, ephemeral architectures encourage both architects and the public to reimagine the possibilities of urban living. This dynamic interplay, between the temporary and the permanent, challenges traditional architectural practices and opens up new avenues for sustainable and inclusive urban development.
Atobiu, meaning “meeting” in Sardinian, is an urban installation in S’Olivariu Park in Uta (CA). The local administration promoted the project intending to create an outdoor theater that re-designs the square behind City Hall, transforming it into a vibrant social hub for the Uta community. This space is designed to be enjoyed by everyone at various times of the day, fostering a sense of community and togetherness.

Gwangju Chusajae – The client is a former forensic scientist in the field of dentistry at a nearby university in Gwangju Metropolitan City. Ahead of his retirement, the client wanted to build a house near the university. Building a house in Gwangju after retirement, far from Seoul, where the client’s family lives, is an unusual choice. ‘Nature and Book’ is the key agenda for the client’s new house. The site is located at the base of Mudeungsan Mountain and has been in the client’s mind for a long time. Mudeungsan Mountain is named after priceless due to its abundance of nature and size. As an extensive reader, owning 23 thousand books was another reason the client had for a new residence.
A campus building not only focuses on the present but also looks to the future; it not only addresses learning needs but also growth needs; it is not only efficient but also vibrant. At the newly-built North Campus of Shenzhen Senior High School Group (hereafter referred to as “North Campus”) where the teaching scene is vibrant, we encourage students to explore knowledge, their surroundings, and the world spontaneously, as learning exists in the dynamic relationship that is built by children and campus resources brick by brick.
Since it was their first, the clients wanted to build a simple residence that allowed a lot of natural light in and felt open and inviting in the heart of Bengaluru. Having spent their childhood growing up in old colonial homes in New Delhi, they wanted one that would reflect their fond memories and take them back to their roots. We Design Studio’s initial vision for this home involved a home with an open-to-sky central courtyard that becomes the heart of the house.
Design studio General Assembly has used a wide material palette to transform an apartment on New York City’s Upper West Side, decorating it with marble and travertine stone and adding wood for a lighter feel. The studio completely transformed the layout of the 3,050-square-foot (284 square metres) flat, which was designed for a young family.
