The Automatic Mills, a national cultural monument, is one of the first buildings designed by the architect Josef Gočár. Standing on the banks of the Chrudimka River in the center of Pardubice, the monumental mill building was created in 1909 for the Winternitz brothers. In 1924, the complex was extended to include a grain silo, the conversion of which we designed. The automatic mills operated continuously for more than 100 years until 2013. Since 2016, the mill brownfield has been transforming a cultural and social urban district, thanks to the initiative of the Automatic Mills Foundation.

A Chair’s Anatomy: The Ergonomics of Anti-Gravity Office Seating

June 4, 2024 Paul Yakubu 0

Sitting for extended periods is an everyday reality in many workspaces, which can lead to a dangerously sedentary working day. This makes office chair design a crucial element for both productivity and overall well-being. Ergonomic design takes into account the human body’s needs, including posture, comfort, support, and health. A good ergonomic chair is adjustable, allowing for better control and customized settings that support the spine and promote a natural position for the body’s joints. An even better ergonomic chair employs technology to accommodate all seating nuances—including occasional slouching, neck rest, and continuous hip movements, among others—, helping to maintain good body posture at all times.

In a backyard in Berlin Neukölln, we removed the roof from an old five-story factory building and created a new 250-square-meter unit with a roof terrace. The existing building consists of a side wing and an almost square transverse building. This T-shaped floor plan structure creates two backyards. It is accessed through the existing staircase in the second courtyard in the side wing and through an external elevator on the transverse building. The second existing staircase in the first courtyard only serves as the second escape route but is also conceivable as an access route.
