The concept of permaculture refers to a design system capable of creating sustainable human environments based on an ethic and a series of ecological, environmental, and resilience design principles. In contact with plants, animals, buildings, and infrastructures such as water, energy, and/or communications, permaculture analyzes the possible relationships between these elements based on their position in the landscape. Its 12 design principles can be applied in multiple architecture projects of varying scales and programs, contributing, for example, to the dissemination of new ways to reduce energy consumption in homes, save water through rainwater harvesting or the recycling of greywater for sanitary systems, gardens, and more, and participate in food production, among other matters.

The Architectural League Prize for Young Architects + Designers is an annual portfolio competition for early-career practitioners in North America. Established in 1981, the competition is entered around a yearly theme. This year, the 2024 Young Architects + Designers Committee proposed the theme “Dirty,” prompting designers to “look beyond their presentations of professionalism, respectability, and expertise” and reject the sanitized ways of working.

Dr. Yen-Son (Paul) Huang Courtyard is a memorial design dedicated to the Tainan native of the same name, who is best known as the developer of PiE Design Systems and NOVAS Software, in addition to being the major founder of ECAD and the creator of the Dracula physical design verification system. He was a graduate of the second generation of National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU) in Hsinchu, Taiwan, and was one of the most successful technologists and serial entrepreneurs in Taiwan’s semiconductor industry.  During his lifetime, Dr. Yen-Son (Paul) often shared with his family how grateful he was for the cultivation of NYCU. In gratitude for Dr. Huang’s deep affection for his alma mater, the family donated 20 million NTD to establish the atrium, representing Dr. Huang’s entrepreneurial spirit. Designed by Taiwanese firm JC. Architecture & Design, the courtyard was revealed at the Department of Electrophysics’ 60th anniversary. 

Studio Gang has just released the design for the new Marlboro Agricultural Education Center in Brooklyn, New York. Reimagining a more equitable and inclusive food system, the design transforms a New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) campus into a hub for multigenerational education, job training, and community leadership in urban agriculture. Operated by the nonprofit organization The Campaign Against Hunger (TCAH), the Center seeks to leverage longstanding efforts across the city to enhance food autonomy and security in underserved neighborhoods.

This tragedy, which left over half a million people homeless, was understood to be the result of a combination of factors, including human actions that have devastated ecosystems to create environmentally irresponsible cities.
