Como Agua Restaurant / Otherworlds

January 26, 2024 Hana Abdel 0

Idea – The project was conceived as a bird’s nest perched on top of a hill in a forest. The intention was to explore what it’s like to dine in an overgrown, enlarged weaver’s nest on a hill surrounded by lush tropical paradise. Located on Vagator Cliff overlooking the sea in North Goa, India, this restaurant and bar was a challenge to build and execute. The entire structure was built sustainably, from the construction techniques to its building materials. The project has been primarily built using bamboo and a repurposed wild shrub, Lantenna Camara. The latter is an invasive species of plants widespread in the Western Ghats, which affects agriculture, forest growth, wildlife, and tribal livelihood every year. By repurposing this wild invasive species and using it as a building material, the project displays innovative building practices using biological materials while creating emphasis on antenna removal, use, and restoration.

The work of Japanese artist Tasuya Tanaka is a miniature universe, where every detail comes to life. His tiny sculptures stand out under the domes arranged on two curved counters that capture the gaze and allow visitors to circulate each piece. The pieces rest on rotating bases, keeping them in continuous motion. Static points of illumination create a constant transformation in the shadows of the sculptures, suggesting to the visitor a pause to contemplate the complete three-dimensionality of each work from different perspectives.

Exploring African Vernacular Huts: Weaving as a Climatic and Social Architecture

January 26, 2024 Paul Yakubu 0

Weaving is not only a technical craft but also a way to design material experiences. Engaging in the process of weaving allows us to structure, communicate, reflect on, and connect with our designs. By experimenting with different fabric structures, we gain insight into how materials behave under tension and compression. This understanding helps us push the boundaries of textiles and their limitations, resulting in designs that stretch and test the properties of the materials.

Two buildings make up the new headquarters of IFEA: a monumental house, preserved through structural reinforcement, where administrative offices, the bookstore, and the cafeteria are located; and a new building, on a small rear plot, which houses the library on the first floor and research offices on the second level. An existing patio garden functions as a threshold between them, extending the relationship with the street through a lateral access gallery.
