Sustainable Building Models: An Eco-Friendly Structure in Natural Slate Within a Multi-Ecological Neighborhood

December 5, 2023 Enrique Tovar 0

Moving towards modernity implies questioning established concepts. Today, we are witnessing several projects and approaches in architecture that explore alternatives to energy-intensive building systems, materials, and technologies commonly used in today’s construction. These projects, far from adopting approaches that reject technology, seek to promote conscious architectural practices. They aim to go back to basics through passive strategies, using natural materials and a contextual understanding to develop sustainable architecture.

A peaceful getaway in the forest: the architecture that becomes part of Gotjawal. The Gotjawal forests on Jeju Island evoke enchanting memories throughout the four seasons. Often regarded as the “lung” of Jeju, Gotjawal comprises a lava forest that maintains its lush greenery year-round. Gotjawal designates an area where highly viscous lava separates into large and small rock fragments during volcanic eruptions, resulting in an uneven(凹凸) topographical terrain. Eventually, this process leads to the establishment a primitive forest where trees, vines, and various vegetation intermingle. The term “Got-Jawal” is a compound word, originating from two Jeju dialect words: “got,” which signifies a forest, and “jawal,” which refers to tangled and untidy bushes in the local dialect.

This one-bedroom house is located near the rim of a steeply sloping Auckland volcanic crater cone. Likely considered too hard to build on by most, we saw an opportunity for something great for the clients, my parents, who were looking to downsize when they purchased the empty section. The initial brief for the home contained more ’wants’ than the modest target construction budget allowed, so we challenged any preconceived ideas in order to design a home specifically for their needs, likes, and idiosyncrasies of living. Every decision with regard to design and detail was scrutinized, cost, and re-evaluated, before committing to.

Crystal Restaurant / NH Village Architects

December 4, 2023 Pilar Caballero 0

The restaurant was designed and renovated from a long, tube-shaped house on 53 Hang Chuoi Street, an old Hanoi street, and serves high-quality Japanese grilled beef dishes. A large, old tree on the property plays an important role in the design of the restaurant’s exterior landscape. The common dining area is on the first floor, while the private dining room space is on the second and third floors. The main design concept is to create a space composed of contrasting crystal lights and the soft, deep landscape space outside the restaurant, creating a sense of elegance and sophistication.
