Rammed earth is one of the oldest methods of constructing walls and still holds great potential for modern earth construction. One aspect of this potential is the gift of its colors and layers, which become visible as the formworks are removed, revealing a layered character. As a process that involves the layer-by-layer compression of gravel, sand, silt, and clay, its resulting appearance is a horizontal stratification of earth tones, material content, and curing procedures. This colorful appearance of rammed earth walls can be controlled and explored through patterns, texture, pigmentation, and natural clay colors, offering an opportunity to push its boundaries within architecture.

While compact in its footprint and barn-like massing, House Between Forest and Field engages in various ways with the expansive landscape around it. Situated at the boundary between forest and field on its 13-acre lot, the narrow, 3-story house is also inspired by both, joining together the exterior identity of agricultural buildings with an interior organization inspired by the spatial experience of a forest.

The third edition of the Paradyż Designers competition is now open for submissions with a new international scope. The competition will focus on the use of TRI-D sintered stone to create modern, innovative spaces. This year’s jury will be led by Jürgen Mayer H., who together with the rest of the jury will revise the entries by designers, architects and art students in several categories concerning space designing using TRI-D sintered stones. The prizes amount to EUR 40,000 and include a trip to Salone del Mobile in Milan, all of which is organized by Polish tile manufacturer Ceramika Paradyż.

MVRDV has revealed the design of a new residential complex located in the Enterprise Research Campus in the Allston neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts, a site adjacent to the Harvard Business School. The development, already under construction, features 343 apartments with a quarter of them dedicated to affordable units. It also includes amenities for the residents and retail spaces for small local businesses, aiming to create an inclusive and enjoyable space within the new urban district.

Mediterranean, the Manuel Bouzas pavilion for the second edition of the TAC! Urban architecture festival in Valencia. Mediterranean is a tribute to the Mediterranean blind, a mechanism that has allowed for centuries the adaptation of spaces inhabited by humans to inclement weather, offering an effective, simple, and lightweight solution to combat high temperatures. The pavilion is conceived as an urban blind, which, instead of protecting a window, covers an entire square, and instead of sheltering a single individual, gathers an entire community. From September 25th to October 16th, numerous activities have taken place under this large suspended shade, reactivating the square and returning it to the public scene.

Built on a former airport site in Hong Kong, Snøhetta Asia has unveiled its latest project in Hong Kong, Airside. This mixed-use landmark was actually Snøhetta’s first project in the country and serves as a central hub in a redeveloped business district. The project boasts ample public areas and gardens, including outdoor plazas and rooftop gardens that may be used for events, dining, urban farming, and leisure. As the first project in Hong Kong to obtain five of the highest green building certifications, this development integrates several sustainable practices.
