We remodeled an unfinished elementary school. As a microcosm of the intense residential development that is commonly occurring in county units, this school in Xinyang Huangchuan County, Henan Province, is surrounded by high-rise residential neighborhoods on an extremely compact site. Walking into it, one feels as if one has returned to the high-rise buildings of the big city, oblivious to the vast fields that lie just a kilometer or two away.

Design starting from the general layout. This project starts with the urban area and the general plan design; The site is located in the middle of an urban strip park sandwiched between two river channels, Donghu Port (artificial channel) and Shahu Port (artificial channel). The construction site is located on both sides of Tuanjie Avenue, with the main building of the park’s tourist center on the north side and the teaching area, dormitory area, office building, and outdoor activity area of the study center on the south side. The design aims to create a sponge research and learning complex based on the sponge park.

Situated in the heart of Moonlight Basin in Big Sky, Montana, this mountain retreat rises into the dense fir and pine trees, offering a close connection to the natural environment for the owner’s family. With their main residence in Manhattan, the owner couple desired a vacation home where they could reconnect with nature and encourage their three children to experience the landscape as they grow up. The husband spent time growing up on his grandfather’s tree farm in New Hampshire and wanted to recreate those treasured experiences amongst nature for his young family.

The Sloping House owes its name to the dual condition of assuming the slope of the pre-Andean range of Santiago and self-acquired family debt, which confronts us with the revisionism of our own way of living, inhabiting, and projecting. As the first decision in starting this family project, we took on the slope and inhabited the continuous space, embodying in this domestic space a conscious search experienced in almost 20 years of professional practice, which set a roadmap for the project: the house had to be traversed, it had to allow for communal and individual life, the social, work, and contemplation, the functional and the aesthetic. As a foundational act, we traced the spaces with chalk on the ground and captured with a device the views that each one wanted to frame (see photos by authors).

From the beginning, there was a discussion about the possibility of building a two-story house for Casa Patio. However, there was a constant concern about maintaining an open area, a free space. This concern was always present, and in a way, the concept of the patio was already implicit from the start of the project.
