The project is located on a raised plateau, approximately ten meters above a beach surrounded by cliffs, forming a private cove. The access from the road is captivating, cutting through dry forests with centennial trees. The journey involves crossing the Río Muchacho, whose growth during rains complicates accessibility, leading to the decision to construct the building over the six months of the dry season.

The Symbolism of Yakisugi: Explore the Beauty and Durability of this Wood in Contemporary Architecture

October 6, 2023 Helena Tourinho 0

Wood in contemporary construction is often associated with coziness, simplicity, and a certain sense of nobility. Despite requiring more frequent maintenance compared to materials like concrete, wood is increasingly considered a viable option within the concept of regenerative design, owing to its place in the natural organic cycle of our planet. While wood has been a staple in architectural design, carbonized wood, known as yakisugi, is gaining significant attention as a finishing choice.

Piil Tree House Retreat / Arsenit

October 6, 2023 Hadir Al Koshta 0

Piil, named after the Estonian word ‘piiluma’ for ‘peeking/looking’ is an elegant, 9m tall pre-fabricated treehouse with a compact plan, elevated to minimize the ground-level presence and indeed, provides generous views out to the vast Estonian wilderness. The 19m2 structure stands on one ‘leg’, suspended over a terrace to create an open-air ‘living room’ sheltered from rain and snow. A discreet door provides access inside, with the cladding layer peeled back to reveal the metal structure supporting the impressive cantilever. Both the ‘leg’ and the accommodation modules above act as large steel trusses — made in-house by the Client, metal manufacturer Levstal Group. Wrapped in hit-and-miss pine cladding, the ‘leg’ contains a staircase, services, and a sports equipment store. The raised bedroom provides greater seclusion, a unique vantage point, and an opportunity to rest among tree branches.

Villa No. 3 Straw + Wooden House / Jimmi Pianezzola Architetto

October 6, 2023 Andreas Luco 0

The town Dueville, though owing its toponym to different reasons, curiously hosts two ancient villas separated by a straight road; Porto a Vivaro (1554) by Andrea Palladio and the Palladian Da Porto Casarotto (1776) by Ottone Calderari. Villa no.3 was born out of a play on words; to try to build, albeit in our small and fragmented context of contemporary -Veneto-, a dwelling that could be, at least for the patrons who will live in it, the third villa in the country. The project, continuing facetiously, takes as an ideal model a villa ‘other’ than the Vicenza tradition; specifically a pre-Palladian Renaissance building, Villa Vescovi in the Paduan hills by architect Giovanni Maria Falconetto.

The (in)visible pavilion presents contrasting perspectives: reflecting on the outside, while revealing transparency within. It acts as a temporal connector, transcending the boundaries of time for the 4th Seoul Biennale of Architectureand Urbanism.

Córdoba Public Library / Paredes Pedrosa Arquitectos

October 6, 2023 Andreas Luco 0

If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need. The Library, with a privileged location in Jardines de la Agricultura, assumes the difference in level between the long urban park and the Avenue that covers the railway. The origin of its trapezoidal plan is the layout of the 18th-century gardens, which respects the existing trees and fragments its height towards the park where a cantilevered balcony introduces inside the view of the treetops.
