Coffee Shop Design: Creating Rich and Well-Balanced Interiors

October 31, 2023 James Wormald 0

At 23.5 degrees north and 23.5 degrees south of the equator respectively, sit the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn. The 3,000-mile-wide band between them that wraps around the Earth is affectionately known as the ‘bean belt’. The tropical and sub-tropical climatic conditions inside the belt, as well as the high percentage of land over 1,000 meters above sea level, create the perfect conditions for the coffee plant to thrive.

Confronting the Racist Legacy of Urban Highways

October 31, 2023 Diane Jones Allen 0

Highways, in their inanimate state, cannot be racist. However, the forces that located them and the consequences of their placement are inextricably connected to race. Deborah Archer, a law professor and civil rights lawyer, captures the central concept: “Highways were built through and around Black communities to entrench racial inequality and protect white spaces and privilege.”

Benthem Crouwel Architects designed the plan for the new Museum Arnhem at a prominent location on a green moraine in the city of Arnhem, The Netherlands. The monumental building from 1873 underwent a spectacular renovation: the characteristic historic dome was restored and a unique new extension of more than 1,100 m2 of exhibition space has been created, added to the existing 1,350 m2 in the monument, resulting in a total of 1,935 ‘state-of-the-art’ exhibition spaces. A special feature is the new wing, which protrudes 15 meters over the moraine, making visitors feel like they are hovering above the trees.

The passive house gives high-quality urban living a place in a hidden corner of Brussels’ city center. On a very shallow plot between high apartment buildings, the house offers an exciting living solution. Hamidur Rahman Memorial Complex / Marina Tabassum Architects

The Hamidur Rahman Memorial Complex is located along the Buringanga River in Fatullah. The sprawling grounds are screened from the street by a high wall. The former Hamid family home was built in the 1960s at the site’s western end, directly on the riverbank. In the years that followed, leading to the country’s independence, it was a secret meeting place and served as a hideout for Awami League politicians who could reach the house unseen by boat. After 1971, a cold storage facility was built on the property for commercial purposes, and nine years later, a multi-story textile factory was built. The family home remained unused with all these developments, which led to its dilapidation.

Pavilion ∞ / Atelier Lai

” Pavilion ∞” is located in a village in the hilly area of western Zhejiang Province. The village sits halfway up the mountain and has good views on all sides when you look far. Most of the houses in the village had been renovated into residential hostels, so a restaurant and reception space were needed. This Pavilion is the first building to be seen when get into the village, it is rebuilt from a native private house. The first floor is adjacent to the road, and serves as the reception area of the village and the kitchen logistics area; while the second floor has a wide view and would be a good spot for a restaurant. The back of the pavilion is close to the bamboo forest and in front of the natural landscape. So how should this architecture be among the natural landscape? It’s a question that design is required to answer.

If we were to talk about a desirable, communal living space – one that is ingrained and thus, an integral part of our culture and growing up; where do we start? Perhaps, we start with the stories that we have heard, the images and the thoughts we have from then – thoughts that built over time into inseparable, interconnected and congruous narratives and many more stories. This way of life stimulated our senses and we experienced and explored expression – which resonated beyond just the visual sight or aesthetics. It appealed to us at many levels.

Fugazzi Basement Bar / studio gram

October 30, 2023 Andreas Luco 0

“You know what a Fugazzi is? Fugazzi, it’s a fake. It’s hazy, It’s a doozie, It’s fairy dust. It doesn’t exist. It never landed. It is in no matter. It’s not on the elemental chart. It’s not fucking real.”
