Victorian Family Violence Memorial / Muir + Openwork

September 2, 2023 Hana Abdel 0

The memorial is located next to the Parliament Precinct in East Melbourne and has an outlook to Fitzroy Gardens. The design for the memorial is framed around five elemental design moves that change the way people behave on the site rather than changing the site character itself. These elements are recognizable civic gestures that acknowledge the requirements of a memorial to accommodate both the individual and the collective. The natural topography of the site is exploited while a reading of the formal aspects of the surrounding context are seen, considered, snudged. The sweeping arc folds into the land, providing spaces of procession, congregation, and reflection. A wall of thin black plate steel holds the memorial. Fragility and strength. Thinness. Robust. Singular. A large fold in the land is defined through an elevated platform for the congregation and the view beyond Fitzroy Gardens. A memorial wall folds into the landscape, supporting the land above. A room whose edge is defined by seating sits below the elm tree, orientating the body to the memorial wall and the view beyond to Fitzroy Gardens. New concrete decking slips away from the existing arced path, bringing people into a room through a moment of procession and compression bracketed by planting.

Pinati / Clube + Luiz Solano + Pianca Arquitetura

September 2, 2023 Andreas Luco 0

PINATI occupies one of the townhouses built in the 1930s on the corner of Rua Armando Penteado and Rua Alagoas. The corner, obtuse, makes the plot unfold in a triangle, and it is from its apex and the two sides of this triangle that the project develops itself. The building had been occupied by an ice cream shop, which completely reconfigured its internal floor plan. From the original house, only the façade and the wooden structure of the roof remained. With a new metallic reinforcement structure, all the internal walls were demolished and a mezzanine was created.

O Castro da Costiña Cabins / Gramática Arquitectónica

Permaculture began in the 70s. It is a system of agricultural design principles based on the patterns and characteristics of the natural ecosystem. The word permaculture comes from the English contraction of the words permanent and culture to refer to agriculture as sustainable permanent processes. We can live without taking photos and uploading them to the network, but we cannot stop eating every day. Agriculture shapes and has shaped our landscapes and societies, and in the case of the Retiro da Costiña project, it shapes how the implementation of the temporary stay modules on the plot has been organized.
