The villa is located in an elevated area with a strong slope in the city of Leiria. The conditions of the subdivision suggested a volumetry of a tower, a viewpoint over the city. One of our premises was that the social areas were located on the upper floors and the swimming pool on the roof, to enjoy the 360º view.

How Thermal Modification Can Make Wood in Architecture Last a Lifetime

September 5, 2023 Eduardo Souza 0

Wood is a material with unique characteristics –such as its natural warmth and tactile quality– capable of providing a sense of comfort and well-being, evoking emotions and memories, and creating a cozy atmosphere in interior spaces. Its versatility allows it to be used in building structures, for solar protection, or as interior cladding, and it can be molded, carved, and jointed to create a variety of forms, from simple to complex designs. When properly maintained and kept in ideal conditions, wood can last for hundreds of years. However, as a natural material, it is susceptible to degradation over time due to biological, chemical and environmental factors, which can result in rotting, cracking, erosion and the loss of physical properties.

Home / Spacy Architecture

The residence is located in a quiet suburb, 30 km. from the heart of Bangkok, where individual private plots were laid out around a lush golf course at the center. The neighborhood is quite a perfect location that provides a hideaway environment to live after spending rough hours in a busy city. It’s quite a place in which we can allow life to flow, spend quality time, and ease up for a moment. The house is facing a lake across the internal road and pedestrians in the west. Building orientation corresponds with serene visual elements from the living space onto nature.

Rock&Ride Shenzhen MixC Popup Store / Within-Beyond Studio

September 5, 2023 Pilar Caballero 0

The architectural design inspiration for this project originates from the heavy industry domain, drawing from fuel towers and jet propulsion systems, with a focus on the dynamics of “energy storage” and “ejection.” It translates into a symbolic architectural space using concise language, aligning with the core spirit of the American retro jewelry brand Rock&Ride. The design is rich in passion and power, symbolizing the infusion of continuous energy into the free riders. The breakthrough in the context of block-type commerce lies in the open embrace of urban space, creating a favorable urban living experience. Simultaneously, the construction of the architectural image must strike a balance between artistry and mass appeal, allowing for a distinctive commercial space that can amplify the brand’s voice and inject new vitality into the urban landscape.

Peng’s House / L&M Design Lab

September 4, 2023 Valeria Silva 0

After starting FIRE, Mr. Peng, born in the 80s, decided to bring his wife and children back to his hometown to live with his parents. Therefore, the renovation of this old house in the countryside of Qidong became an urgent matter. The new Peng residence needed to accommodate the different living habits of the two generations so that the rural and urban lifestyles could be blended and distinctly separated. Qidong’s rural construction regulations are strict, requiring that the renovation of the Peng’s residence is completed within the original contours (90 square meters of base area) and that the appearance should match that of the original “matchbox”. The old house to be renovated was constructed in the 1980s as a standard rural building, a simple standard rural building which, due to its affordability, influenced the countryside of that era in the north and south of the Yangtze River. This is a challenging design, neither the city people’s attachment to elegance, nor the rural people’s modern improvement, but the need to complete a comfortable daily space for three generations of urban and rural people within a framework full of limitations.

JAA 2760 Apartments / Peñafiel Arquitectos

September 4, 2023 Benjamin Zapico 0

The neighborhood of Vitacura between Espoz, Nueva Costanera, Américo Vespucio, and Alonso de Córdova streets, was born from an urbanization project for single-family homes in the middle of the 20th century. The main luxury of this project is that it was commissioned by its future residents, and not solely for commercial purposes. As architects, we were able to plan the building thinking about its architectural quality and the quality of life for its clients. On the 1,450 m2 plot, there was a house, and the initial lines for this project aimed to fit, as much as possible, the concept and image of a house. This includes its scale, way of life, relationship with the ground, and relationship with neighbors. The initial images showed a compact and clear 3-story structure. A main parallelepiped supported longitudinally on the ground, accompanied by an adjacent tower with a square plan. The commission was to develop 4 duplex apartments on the first and second floors, and a larger one on the third floor. Part of the roof is a private terrace, while the rest of the surface is a rooftop garden that adds to the green areas of the neighborhood. This program introduces a special complexity to the project, as all floors are different and the structure and installations need to fit together naturally. One of the initial project decisions was to use the minimum number of elements and materials possible. Exposed concrete for structural elements, dark aluminum and glass for windows, and wood for blinds and partitions. The main rectangular volume is composed of 4 facades differentiated according to their location and orientation. The same materials used for the facades were also used in the interior common circulation spaces. The interior rooms of the apartments have minimal different coatings. The floors are made of wood and the walls and ceilings are painted in light colors to achieve bright, lightweight, and uncluttered environments. The composition of the facades is an important operation of the project. The vertical faces of the main volume are a grid of exposed concrete linear elements that create regular planes within the grid. These were designed according to variable opening patterns, using wood for opaque flat elements and blinds. This allows for a variety of possibilities with few elements that respond to the needs of the homes and a particular plastic composition. On the other hand, the elevator tower is a closed concrete element that acts as a symbolic vertical body and anchors the building to the ground and the neighborhood.
