Tile House / The Bloom

September 26, 2023 Hana Abdel 0

In early 2022, we had the opportunity to work with an investor in Bao Loc, which was also the time when we clearly realized the difficulties that this land would bring. Those were long, dry, sunny days followed by endless rain from day to day. The consequence is that corrugated iron houses keep popping up around them. Although the climate is so harsh, the air here is very pleasant and cool all year round. So the problem is: “How much will the Climate like this house?”

Situated between Alexanderplatz and Schillingstrasse, between East German Plattenbauten and the Kino International, and between Karl-Marx-Allee and a historic residential quarter, Magazinstrasse is a product of Berlin’s urban history. Catercorner to the authoritarian grid used for planning a socialist capital, the street juxtaposes seemingly irreconcilable historical buildings from Berlin’s Gründerzeit era against Soviet prefab.

Upgrading and Renovation of Dinghao Electronics Building / Nikken Sekkei

September 25, 2023 July Shao 0

This project is a conversion of the Ding Hao Building, a 200,000 square-meter commercial and office complex completed in 2003 and 2008 in Zhongguancun, Beijing, an area known as the Silicon Valley of China. Many IT companies are headquartered in Zhongguancun, and with Peking University and Tsinghua University located nearby, the area has become a major hub of advanced companies in Beijing. The building stands on a corner site that can be considered the gateway to the Zhongguancun area in relation to Beijing’s Fourth Ring Road and also has a landmark presence in the area with two basement levels directly connected to Zhongguancun Station on Subway Line 4. However, the bustling market for cutting-edge electronic components has waned with the changing times, and in recent years, the building has become crowded with small retail stores. In this renovation, we took on the challenge of revitalizing the building as a high-end office space in response to the increasing demand for business functions in buildings.

House in Bocaina / Ana Altberg + Cesar Jordão

September 25, 2023 Susanna Moreira 0

Since the first visit, we were greatly impressed by the power of Serra da Bocaina, just like the client who requested a house that “embraced the landscape.” After many studies and conversations, in order to interpret this desire, we arrived at a curved form that seeks to incorporate the exterior into the interior of the house in a panoramic manner. With this semi-elliptical object, clad in materials familiar to the forest, we aim to soften the boundaries between the construction and its surroundings, establishing an architecture that positions itself respectfully in this delicate ecosystem. The challenge of negotiating common and private spaces within a circular form led us to examine other architectural references, vernacular constructions, and community spaces that have a deep connection to their environment. This path also led us to reflect on residential typology, mimicry, and context; on “comfort” and “contemplation of nature”; on the time scale of a construction and the intensity of its footprint on the ground.

Polpo Bar / Sofía Betancur

September 25, 2023 Andreas Luco 0

The project is located within the recently restored commercial passage El Parián, an eclectic-style building cataloged by the National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature (INBAL), whose name comes from the Tagalog “parian” which means “market” in Filipino. Open to the public in 1926, El Parián was the first shopping center in Colonia Roma. Polpo is a gastronomic bar that explores the concept of tapas. The spatial design is inspired by the historical typology of a market, where there is a dynamic atmosphere, a certain informality, and open kitchens to the public, which determine the use of space, with people standing and eating something quickly and moving on to the next thing.
