Since its first appearance in the late 18th century, townhouse has gradually become the most popular type of private house in Vietnam. At the same time, the irregular and vibrant network of streets, roads, and alleys has been a distinctive characteristic of big cities such as Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. As a result, a townhouse in a winding alley is arguably the typical home of most inner-city residents. People living in townhouses take advantage of convenient traffic, proximity to amenities, business opportunities, and quickly rising property value over time. However, they are always concerned about the issues of security, safety, and privacy as well as the lack of daylighting, natural ventilation, and greenery space.

The approach behind this project was driven by the objective of revitalizing the existing structure in adherence to the city’s building codes. Our approach involved both preserving and accentuating the building’s key architectural features, while also introducing contemporary vacation rentals. By striking a delicate balance between traditional local aesthetics and modern lifestyles, our aim was to provide customers with an authentic taste of the AlUla experience through thoughtful design.

After snagging a quarter-acre block in the heart of Sorrento, our clients commissioned us to design a home that would suit them both as a holiday house for now and a permanent home in the future. The brief was exacting. A “super-stylish and cool” design that was seamless from inside to outside entertaining with Scandinavian and mid-century modern influences. A second-story with an amazing view, a separate reach, but not too far, bungalow for the clients’ three soon-to-be teenage children, and a solar-heated pool. Finally, a roof deck with unimpeded views of the surrounding tea trees. They also wanted at least four bedrooms, privacy from their neighbors, and, unusually for a beach house, a darker, moodier interior with plenty of timber, stone, and glass.

With the increase in the number of families that do not live with grandparents and dual-income families, there has been a growing trend of isolation in child-rearing, leading to parental stress and anxiety leading to child abuse and hindering the healthy development of children.
