As the capital city of Shandong Province, Jinan is not only the center of provincial politics, economy, culture, and education; but also, a tourist city with the unique natural features of “mountains, springs, lakes, and rivers” with far-reaching history and culture. The project is in the core area of the west new town of Jinan. A square site with each side being about 400 meters long. The Grand Theatre is on the south side of the site. As a significant landmark in local urban planning, the total site area is 16.02 hectares, and the construction area is 380,000 square meters. The project was divided into two phases, spending nearly 12 years from the competition to fully furnished. Site scale, building volumes, and urban planning scale are challenges for the studio.

Shiftspace brings IM Pei rowhouse in Philadelphia back to “original vision”

US studio Shiftspace has renovated a rowhouse in Philadelphia originally designed by Chinese-American architect IM Pei, restoring its original qualities after decades of alterations. Standing among the open fields on the outskirts of Surat, ‘Jungalow 2’, as they call it, is an outcome of the designer’s sensitivity towards nature and sustainability. The designer’s earlier project, ‘Jungalow’ has a generous amount of plantation incorporated throughout the building, lending it a verdant feel despite the project’s urban setting. Cal Totxo Apartment Renovation / Cierto Estudio

Cal Totxo is a modernist house located at the foot of the Collserola Natural Park, which enjoys fantastic views and good solar orientation on its main facade. The original state of the apartment had three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a small isolated kitchen, an interior space without ventilation or natural light, and a couple of very narrow and less interesting corridors.
