The structure is situated on a relatively small rectangular building plot located on Potocka Street in Warsaw’s Żoliborz district. An important factor that impacted the building’s form was the existing surroundings. The plot contained two free-standing buildings designated for demolition due to their poor technical condition. Following a historical survey arranged with the relevant Conservation officer, the two existing apartment buildings were demolished. The block on which the parcel is located is a holdover from the old urban and geodesic layout on which the Marymont-Potok housing estate was built. Compared to the high-rise Communist-era housing estate buildings and the large Marymont sports and recreation complex across Potocka Street, the parcel appears rather small.

Songyi Theater / Beijing Guanzhuan Landscape Planning and Design Institution

In the long river of literature and art, pine, as a common Chinese cultural image, frequently appears in poetry and painting works. Bai Juyi’s poem ” Pine in Court” does not write about pine trees in nature, but rather about ordinary pine trees in a courtyard. The planting method seems chaotic and “like wild things,” but in reality, there is a hidden poetic meaning in the chaos. A merely demolished pine forest. There is a hill in west Rizhao, my hometown. It was originally a barren mountain, but my friend Mr. Yan Zanning spent 20 years changing it to a tea garden and naming it “Cloud Passing Hill”. Mr. Yan invited me to do some new things for this garden. For the first time strolling in the garden, one suddenly enters a pine forest, where the pine trees are like those in Bai Juyi’s “Ting Song”, messy and lively. Although planted by humans, they look like wild animals.

Vrå Children and Culture Center / JAJA Architects

July 9, 2023 Andreas Luco 0

The Vrå Children and Culture Centre goes beyond a conventional school building. It is a place that challenges the boundaries between classroom academics, extracurricular activities, and community life. Evolving the isolated nature of many traditional schools, Vrå is just as much a community space for the entire town, as it is for the students. Architecturally, by blending the built environment with the surrounding landscape, the school challenges the relationship between constructed and natural.
