Design for Inclusivity at the UIA World Congress of Architects 2023

June 30, 2023 Pernille Maria Bärnheim 0

The UIA World Congress of Architects 2023 is an invitation for architects from around the world to meet in Copenhagen July 2 – 6 to explore and communicate how architecture influences all 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). For more than two years, the Science Track and its international Scientific Committee have been analyzing the various ways in which architecture responds to the SDGs. The work has resulted in the formulation of six science panels: design for Climate Adaptation, design for Rethinking Resources, design for Resilient Communities, design for Health, design for Inclusivity, and design for Partnerships for Change. An international call for papers was sent out in 2022 and 296 of more than 750 submissions from 77 countries have been invited to present at the UIA World Congress of Architects 2023 in Copenhagen. ArchDaily is collaborating with the UIA to share articles pertaining to the six themes to prepare for the opening of the Congress.

Bonnet Springs Park / Sasaki

June 30, 2023 Valeria Silva 0

Between 1880 and the early 1950s, the Bonnet Springs Park site was home to the Lakeland Railyard, which served as a major hub for the movement of freight up and down the east coast. In 1952 the railyard closed, leaving the land in an abandoned state and Lake Bonnet all but forgotten. In 2017 the Bonnet Springs Park board hired Sasaki to create a master plan for the park. Sasaki took input from the public during a six-month outreach period and incorporated ideas and desires into an approved design and park mission: to become an ecological jewel, a cultural magnet, and a connected community asset.

all day place Hotel / DDAA

This project involves a 160-room hotel operated by UDS under the theme of a “public house in the city.” The site is halfway up the slope from Shibuya (meaning “Shibu valley”) to Aoyama (meaning a “blue mountain”), literally the midpoint between the valley and the mountain. It has an atmosphere combining Shibuya and Aoyama. In front of the site is Mitake Park. Here we set out to create a hotel with a welcoming public atmosphere that embraces people’s unrestrained behaviors and noises, echoing the park environment.

The Veranda House / Studio Espaazo

June 30, 2023 Hana Abdel 0

The Veranda House is a weekend home situated on the outskirts of Ahmedabad city, enveloped by a lush tapestry of dense foliage. Within the plot, a retail Bonsai Boutique occupies two-thirds of the space, while ‘The Veranda House’ graces the back, occupying a generous one-third of the space. The client’s directive was to distinctly re-imagine and re-interpret the conventional notion of a ‘veranda,’ a highly utilized and cherished space in Indian households. Their vision encompassed a residence where each area established a profound connection with the landscapes. The client had specified their preference for the absence of traditional beams while maintaining structural integrity and visual cohesiveness. The design concept was developed with the intention of intricately inter-twining the built environment with the natural surroundings. A steadfast commitment to environmental preservation guided the construction process, ensuring the protection and conservation of every existing tree within the premises.

Less than 100 days before the opening of the Asian Games Hangzhou, Fuyang Yinhu Sports Center is ready for the arrival of the Asian Games, the sustainable operation after the Games, and the evaluation from all walks of life. The design team of the Architectural Design & Research Institute of Zhejiang University adheres to the design concept of “realizing green Asian Games through economic means and constructing cultural Asian Games through low-tech means”. On the basis of respecting professional sports technology requirements, combining the landscape intention with Fuyang characteristics, as well as adopting a simple form, a compact spatial layout, environmentally friendly building materials, low-tech construction means, and sustainable venue facilities, the competition venues (sites) for shooting, archery, and modern pentathlon during the Asian Games are designed, aiming at successfully implementing the holding purpose of “green, intelligence, conciseness and civilization” of the Asian Games. With a land area of 275,182m2 and a floor area of 85,840.7m2, this project is one of the 12 newly built venues for the 19th Asian Games in 2023. At that time, the three major events of shooting, archery, and modern pentathlon in the Asian Games will be held here.
