The house is located along the main roads of Can Tho City and is the accommodation of a three-generation family (the culture of “tam đại đồng đường” – three generations living under the same roof). Within the history of more than 300 years of conquering the Southern land of Vietnamese people: from the migrations to the colonization of French people and development into the urban of today…said historical process depicted the cultural identity of this area, in which housing architecture has become a heritage showcasing the nature and origin of the people from the Southwest region.

Catapulted from an inclination to retreat from urban realities, The Cabin House swiftly transforms the pre-pandemic notion of our dwellings. Embracing a quiet reflection of modern lifestyle and vernacular nuances, the design for the 349 sqm (3800 sqft) plot has been developed from a simple brief of experiencing nature at close quarters. Nestled in the lush greenery of South Bangalore, resides the one-bedroom weekend home for a family of three. One is immediately greeted by the large foliage of the jackfruit and mango trees, where the rectangular dwelling sits along the East-West axis. The ground floor punctuates the rigid walls on the longer side to encompass 5m (18ft) pivoted doors on either side to blur the boundaries between the landscape and the residence. 

When the architecture firm The Ranch Mine drove up to their new project site in the fall of 2018 they spotted perhaps the most iconic midcentury home in Phoenix across the street, a house designed by Al Beadle commonly known as White Gates which has sat vacant for decades. Knowing the history of this home, the architects knew immediately that they had the challenging task of creating a new neighborhood that should honor the legacy of the midcentury modern icon while adding a distinctly new chapter to the story of this unique neighborhood.
