The L-shaped layout of the building makes the garden zone hidden from the street. The layout of the building is rotated according to the directions of the world. The Breathing House in a “ફળીયા” sits on a 300-square-meter plot within a residential neighborhood in Gujarat’s diamond hub, Surat. The design of this linear house in the traditional village street now engulfed by urban development is an attempt to create a balance between the traditional lifestyle of the user as well as their modern aspirations. The heart of the house is a court punctured in the center of this linear space which brings in ample light to the indoors. The Swing and the Dining platform allow spontaneous activities in the court and give a feel of the garden within the bungalow. The court keeps the North open for day-long natural light and is the social hub of the house.

B&B and Games – At the end of 2020, near the Great Wall at Shuiguan in Huairou, Beijing, we designed three projects for Xiaoxi B&B simultaneously, perhaps it is more appropriate to call them rural hotels than B&Bs. I have designed and run such hotels before, and I would love to have a unique living experience of “breaking away from daily life” and a lifestyle of “here and now”. Architecture, as a carrier of this conception, is not a “home building” in the first place, for it holds little real life and memory of the owner, instead it resembles a “theme park” with the characteristics above, a reciprocating game between reality and fantasy. Since it is a game, there must be rules. The owner’s requirements are simple: to keep the characters of the three existing houses. And we will make up the rules.
