Exploring the Industrial Aesthetic in Interiors Through Corten Tiles

February 24, 2023 Lucila Sarasola 0

In recent decades, the industrial style has strongly attracted the attention of architects, designers and homeowners. However, few know its true origin. Following the rise of industrialization in the United States during the 1950s, many old industrial spaces, such as warehouses or factories, were abandoned in areas like New York’s Soho. As a consequence, prices fell and became affordable housing alternatives for city dwellers. These new repurposed spaces were characterized by an aesthetic that mixed raw and exposed materials with modern elements and technologies, generating a strong aesthetic identity that was as rustic as it was sophisticated.

The service station beside Suzhou RiverBridge is located on the first floor of the ceramic building at the corner of Guangfu Road, and Wuzhen Road. The ceramic building is the housing of Shanghai Ceramic Corporation, which was completed in 1990. The building’s curved facade faces the corner, its horizontal lines are reinforced by long horizontal Windows, and its color-gradient painted exterior and its descending shape at the northeast corner make it stand out from the usual 20th-century residential buildings. The ground floor of the building used to be hardware, auto repair, etc., which is disconnected from the daily life of residents. Entrusted by the street, we build this place into a community post station integrating fitness, reading, community activities, and volunteer services.

It’s a building renovation project. In an old traditional neighborhood, the building has been transformed from offices and a hotel into an artistic and cultural complex, opening up to the city with a simple and distinctive personality, reuniting the natural landscape of the lake and the lakeside historical and cultural district, activating and bringing new vitality to this historic city.
