The Historical Museum in Frankfurt is one of the oldest institutions of its kind. It is located directly in the centre of the city, at the Römerberg and near the river Main. Until the 2010s, it was housed in an ensemble of historic buildings and in an annex building from the 1970s made of reinforced concrete. This more recent building had become unsuitable for further use due to technical problems concerning fire protection, escape routes, and contamination by harmful substances.

Japanese practice Schemata Architects has nestled a guesthouse and bar into a hill on the coast of an island in the Seto Inland Sea, with large windows that can be fully opened to the surrounding landscape. Oasis Residential Tower / Tchoban Voss Architekten

The Hansaviertel in Berlin’s Tiergarten district was built in the 1950s according to plans by renowned architects as an urban landscape in which solitary houses alternate embedded in green spaces. Today, the district is one of the world’s largest ensemble monuments of ” New Objectivity ” and post-war modernism. The new residential complex “Oasis” was created in the spirit of the original design idea of the quarter and consists of a high-rise building (Tower) with an adjoining three-story apartment building as well as three urban villas (Garden Houses), which were built on a plot near the river Spree of around 5400 sqm designed by landscape architects. The urban design and the preliminary design for the residential tower originally came from Staab Architekten. TCHOBAN VOSS Architekten took over the planning in 2013.

The Story of Greenhouses: A Complicated Identity

The greenhouse is a commonplace architectural typology, a frequent fixture in a host of cities, built to shield plants from the elements — from excess heat or cold or to prolong the growing season of crops. Evidence of the presence of greenhouses in some form stretches as far back as the 1450s during the Korean Joseon dynasty, but it is in the 1700s that the greenhouse was born as a specific architectural form. Glassmaking improved, and thus the largely transparent, wide-span structures we know today were born. Nestled under the intricate iron metalwork of greenhouses are also wider stories — of control and undeserved wealth, and of resistance.

Reviving Al-Nazlah Center, Gallery and Service / Oriental Group Architects + Hamdy El-Setouhy

This intervention of reviving the Al-Nazlah area in Fayoum aims to create a pilot project in contexts of specificity. The valuable district incubates pottery workshops which have been producing special pots used for construction since Ancient Egyptian Civilization. Thus, the upgraded construction technique which enhanced the bonding material by gluing the pots together with the help of lab experiments maintained the traditional technique. Also, new forms have been introduced for roofing construction, which enabled the local community to explore a wider range of spans by introducing domes & vaults constructed by pots.
