January 4, 2023 Duo Dickinson 0

Every “Year In Review” assessment of anything is both myopic and timely. That being said, 2022 was a “Boom” time for architects (and the building industry in general). This snapshot will change in 2023 when this year’s manufactured interest rate jumps will crib death this short and intense boom.

This design for a law firm is located in the residential neighborhood Damansara Heights, in the heart of Kuala Lumpur. The project involved the reuse of a partially demolished 40-year-old house that was then expanded by 50% of its original size. An expanse of brickworks unites the existing and new building sections and provides for an increased thermal mass through large wall protrusions protecting glazing windows from direct sunlight exposures. While the appearance of the building is monolithic from the street front, large, glazed surfaces are located at both sides opening up to a series of pocket gardens that allows for ample natural daylight and cross ventilation to the interiors. Essentially, passive cooling methods have been employed as a core principle to optimize the building’s performance and prevent extensive use of mechanical air conditioning while maintaining optimum comfort.

The condo is located in a high-rise residential building in Nanjing along the Qinhuai River, and the millennium Stone City Wall is on the north of it. The owner couple, who are about to retire, want to transform the existing standard three-beds condo into a residence suitable for retirement living. The design intentionally opens up the enclosed rooms and transforms the three-bedroom layout into one bedroom or as we can also call it: one garden. Original Linear circulation is reorganized into a looped circulation which makes one can stroll in the garden. Walking through the aisles with various functions, the framed view of the interior and exterior windows changes and enriches the sight constantly. It has the same spatial experience as living and moving in a Chinese garden. In the post-pandemic era, people spend a lot more time at home, interesting residential spaces have never been more important than they are today.

Reflection House / AUN Design Studio

“Visualizing a boy playing with his friends in the neighborhood. They run into this house and walk in and out of those houses. Picturing adults leaning against the fence chatting and watching their children run and play.” These fond memories “reflect” the homeowner’s childhood living experience and the relationship with his mother. After decades of being apart, growing up, living, studying, and working abroad alone, the owner wants to come back to a home that facilitates his elder mother and himself, different ages living together in harmony. A home that suits two people and coexists for their ages and needs.
