The Lisbon Architecture Triennale announced as the winner of the fourth edition of the Début Award the São Paulo office Vão, formed by Anna Juni, Enk te Winkel and Gustavo Delonero. The office is known for a transdisciplinary practice that seeks to dilute the boundaries of the professional field in order to enhance architectural reflection. In previous editions, the award recognized the work of Bonell+Dòriga (Spain, 2019), Umwelt (Chile, 2016) and Jimenez Lai, from Bureau Spectacular (USA, 2013).

Desa Hay is a villa complex in Canggu, Bali. Designed for conscious travelers who are mostly foreign tourists, we present traditional-architectural elements of Indonesian. Not only Bali but also Java and Sumatra. Interestingly, the client of Desa Hay also wants a touch of Ubud’s peaceful atmosphere in this area. So, we try to create natural surroundings using some natural materials that blend with plantations. Surrounded by rice fields, guests will pass through stone paths when they arrive in Desa Hay. Green plants with wood fences beside them become a natural guide before they get into the villas.

With the COVID-19 pandemic and consistent lockdowns causing shifts in our routines and growing uncertainty about the future of urban life, Mr. Abhishek Ubale and Mrs. Sunaina from Bangalore decided to buy a farm in Sanctity Ferme, a farming community on the outskirts of the city of Bangalore. The community, which was practicing organic farming techniques and promoting its vision of consistent contact with the natural surroundings, was already planning for sustainable model houses for the residents. This became the perfect opportunity to explore the possibility of how we can build sensibly in untouched virgin landscapes.

Resort at Panchalimedu / Srijit Srinivas – ARCHITECTS

Resort At Panchalimedu – The Resort is located in the hill station of Panchalimedu in Idukki district, with close proximity to the historically significant pond in which Panchali is believed to have bathed. The design had to overcome the challenges of steep terrains, budget constraints, and local climactic characteristics of strong winds & rainfalls. The design response was one of sensory richness emanating from tranquil spaces and an original architectural style of chic ethnic heritage but with all the trappings of modern living. The use of raised circulation paths to overcome the undulating terrain below makes the design very friendly to guests.

Drawn to the extensive vegetation rather than the views of the ocean, the client’s brief asked for an experience “like camping amongst the trees, but without the tent”. Rather than optimizing views to the ocean that may be lost over time as the foreshore vegetation matures, this home is thoughtfully woven between the existing stand of Brushbox trees on the site. By retaining as many trees as possible, the light-filled and open upper-level living spaces are connected to the canopy.
