Creating and Managing Qualified Teams for Architectural Projects

October 13, 2022 Eduardo Souza 0

From the first traces of a sketch to the ribbon cutting at the official inauguration, a building and its construction process goes through numerous steps. From understanding client demands, complying to local regulations, staying within budget, getting the necessary approvals for development and construction details, a lot of time, resources and decisions are involved. To this end, it is essential to have a workforce that knows and understands the correct processes inside-out, are well informed and have experience and availability. Finding and training this workforce isn’t always easy though, and this is where Aligned Studios comes in: a service that creates and manages teams composed of qualified designers for US architectural and construction companies.

Women Architects and their Material Strategies: Bo Bardi, Merrick & Hadid

October 13, 2022 Camila Prieto 0

Although there is more of a balance between women and men in architecture today, the landscape was quite different a few decades ago. Pioneering women architects have been resistant in a profession dominated by men, and have faced skepticism in challenging contexts, such as construction sites itself. Zaha Hadid commented on the difficulty of inclusion in what she called the “boys club”, listing the difficulties in coming to agreements or creating partnerships. Lina Bo Bardi, in turn, used her strong personality to overcome the sexism of her time. Even though these difficulties, women have always found a way to stand out and bring priceless contributions to the profession.

October 13, 2022 Andreas Luco 0

6×60 House is a one-storey building settled along a stream. It hosts three apartments with different dimensions, belonging to three members of the same family. The building is located between two different surroundings: wide agricultural fields and a far forest on one side, and the main road of the village on the other. In order to detach the house from the ground, a system of piles has been used to support the concrete slab on which 21 parallel walls are resting and supporting a pitched roof. 3 concrete steps located along the South-East side permit to access to the porch on the platform, from where it is possible to walk all around the building and access the apartments.

La Ribera Housing / Zeller & Moye

October 13, 2022 Pilar Caballero 0

A Vecindad, a traditional housing typology with simple row houses facing a linear patio in Mexico City, is re-interpreted as a new apartment building for young families. The program is implemented in a typical narrow but deep plot in the Santa María La Ribera neighbourhood, just a few blocks away from the famous Moorish Pavilion. As a new impulse to its immediate vicinity the housing development contributes like a catalyst to the regeneration of the currently otherwise undervalued barrio.

Zhu Feng Village For-All Community Center / SAFA Laboratory of Architectural Design

October 13, 2022 Collin Chen 0

Re-generation: Resilience in Rural Residence. Zhu Feng Village is a famous Zhi-Qing village in Shangyu city, Zhejiang Province, with a unique Zhi-Qing culture. As early as 1965, Zhu Feng Village welcomed the first batch of Zhi-Qing to settle here, followed by four more batches in 1973, 1974, 1976, and 1977. Since 2020, under the commission of XiaGuan Town, Zhi-Qing Memory Museum For-All, Zhi-Qing Dining Hall For-All, and Zhi-Qing Medical Station For-All, these small cultural facilities transformed from village residences have been gradually designed and built. As a public cultural activity space open to the whole society, the design is a subtle intervention of the renovated building group into the original village settlement with a renewal strategy on a microscopic scale. This concept is mainly based on the following two aspects. On the one hand, although the construction process of preserving and renovating rural dwellings was expected to be particularly difficult, the design continues the scale of rural dwellings as far as possible, retaining some of the original elements, and flexibly transforming them from private to the public through the reorganization of internal spaces and functions. On the other hand, the owner’s strict control of the construction schedule dictates that the finalization of spaces and details needs to be carried out on-site in collaboration with a number of craftsmen. It is important to consider both the cost and the integration of old and new elements.
