The majority of building construction in cities is the result of private initiatives. In this sense, working for the real estate market is one of the most effective ways to contribute to the construction of a more generous urbanity. Following an invitation from the real estate company Surmonte, the project is a collaboration between MMBB and TAA, from Santiago de Chile, where the project is located. Built in the Providencia neighborhood, the project is resolved as a compact building with a minimum of condominium circulation, circumscribed by four apartments per floor.

Above a metalwork shop in Basel’s Matthäusquartier, eight new residential units rise. Made from prefabricated wood elements, the new four-story building sits atop the existing ground-level structure. On the street side, the addition matches the eave height of the neighboring property and reinterprets the adjacent roof edge as a sawtooth roof. Its shape and orientation also make it the ideal location for the building’s solar panels. On the courtyard side, the building is stepped back as required by zoning, creating a spacious balcony for each apartment.

Surman Weston uses architecture as “enabler for a great cause” at Hackney School of Food

Architecture studio Surman Weston has created a teaching space for children to learn about food in Hackney, London, which has been awarded the Stephen Lawrence Prize 2022 by the RIBA.
