Whether for large multi-generational families, cohabiting cohorts, or retired couples, the kitchen is the heart of our homes. It’s where we spend most of our time and, therefore, where we keep all our stuff. Along with the usual food and cookware, kitchens are also resting places for household utility essentials like cleaning products, laundry facilities, and the infamous ‘everything drawer’.

We live in a world where the experienced, remembered, and imagined, as well as different moments in space and time concerning the past, present, and future are inseparably blended. As of recent, we are being offered various mediums to gain access to other planes of existence, utilizing immersive technologies like virtual and augmented reality (VR and AR), creating a pathway to the metaverse in which we are transported to spaces that are capable of feeling more ‘real’ than anything we presently experience.

While thinking of a home for the future we looked back on what we have lost. Homes of tomorrow need to respond to an urgent need for sustainability and values enhanced by the technology available. Architecture needs to regain the idea of presence, of being part of a place and time. It has always been related to its context, the available resources, and local construction method, all of this should continue to be an essential part of it even though nowadays material can travel around the globe. Using local resources and construction methods the project gains a sense of place and a true relation to its natural and artificial surroundings.

Earth House (Casa Terra) is located at the foot of a hill in a closed condominium, Solar da Serra rural condominium, 20 km from the National Congress, in Plano Piloto, Brasília – Federal District. It was designed to be the home of the architect who designed it, with her husband, the landscaper, and two children. The construction stages, from project conception to execution, can be understood as an exercise in the techniques proposed by the architect in her own projects: more ecological and sustainable, aiming to reduce impacts on the environment.
